June 10, 1692: One person found guilty of witchcraft is executed by hanging in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

June 10, 1898: The last-known native speaker of the Dalmatian language, Tuone Udaina, dies. Udaina is killed in an explosion caused by road work. 

June 10, 1990: British Airways Flight 5390, flying between Birmingham, England, and Málaga, Spain, experiences explosive decompression when an improperly-installed front windowpane falls off the aircraft. The captain, 42-year-old Timothy Lancaster, is partially propelled outward, with his lap belt and crew members managing to prevent him from exiting the aircraft. Remarkably, Lancaster survives, and the aircraft makes an emergency landing without fatalities. Lancaster suffers cuts and bruises, frostbite, shock, and a broken right arm, and later develops PTSD from the incident.

June 10, 2016: 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie is shot as she signs autographs after a performance in Orlando, Florida, and will die the following day. The perpetrator also killed himself.

May 2, 1536: Anne Boleyn, Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, is arrested and charged with incest, witchcraft, adultery, and treason. She’s taken to the Tower of London. These charges are false: Henry’s real reasons for wanting to be rid of Anne include her failure to provide him with a male heir and his desire to court her lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour. 

May 2, 1957: Censured U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy dies of hepatitis at the age of 48 after struggling with severe alcoholism and morphine addiction. 

May 2, 1981: Antiques dealer Jim Williams shoots 21-year-old Danny Hansford at Williams’s historical home, Mercer House (formerly owned by composer Johnny Mercer) in Savannah, Georgia. The lovers had been in an argument; Williams argued the killing was self-defense. After four trials, Williams was acquitted. The homicide is the basis of John Berendt’s book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

April 4, 1841: The 9th U.S. president, William Henry Harrison, dies in office of what was thought at the time to be pneumonia. He has been inaugurated as president only a month earlier. Harrison is the first U.S. president to die in office.

April 4, 1865: During the American Civil War, Union troops set fire to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Only four buildings survive. Among those destroyed is the university’s 7,000-volume library. The Confederacy surrenders only five days later.

April 4, 1968: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated. (Note: This also happened to be the day American poet Maya Angelou turned 40.)

Bummer March 13th

March 13, 2020: 26-year-old emergency room technician Breonna Taylor is killed by police in her home in Louisville, Kentucky. Seven police officers in plain clothes with what’s known as a “no-knock warrant” for a man wanted in connection with a drug case burst into Taylor’s home. Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker, apparently mistaking the officers for home invaders, fired a warning shot at them. The shot slightly wounded one of the officers, who returned 32 rounds of bullets in return, striking Taylor five times.

Sunday, February 26, 1995, South Bend: I went to the Morris Performing Arts Center and saw 1964: The Tribute, a Beatles tribute band. I recognized three people in the audience: a pair of sisters who went to the same grade school as me, and Mr. Thomas Gerencher.

February 26, 1997: At the 39th Annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden, The Beatles won a Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammy for “Free As a Bird.” Other winners included Tony Bennett, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crow, the Dave Matthews Band, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

February 26, 1972: A coal slurry impound dam bursts in Logan County, West Virginia, sending 132 million gallons of coal-contaminated water into the Buffalo Creek Valley, where 16 coal mining towns housed a total of about 5,000 residents. An estimated 125 people were killed, more than a thousand were injured, and over 4,000 residents were left homeless. 

February 26, 2013: 19 tourists are killed in Luxor, Egypt, where balloons are often used to view the Nile River, when their hot air balloon crashes. A leak in the fuel system causes a fire on board. Seven of those who died had jumped from the balloon. Two men from the United Kingdom initially survive the accident, but one of them dies at the hospital five hours later. 

February 26, 1993: A terrorist bomb explodes in the underground parking garage under the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing six people and injuring hundreds more.

February 26, 1994: Comedian Bill Hicks dies of pancreatic cancer at age 32. 

February 26, 2015: Australian author Jessica Ainscough, age 29, dies of a rare cancer, epithelioid sarcoma. In 2008, her doctors suggested amputating her affected left arm at the shoulder, which would have given her a greater than 50% chance of surviving for ten years or more. Ainscough chose to treat her cancer with alternative therapies rather than having the amputation. She used the alternative treatments for six years, only returning to conventional medical treatments near the end of her life when she developed a tumor that bled continuously for ten months.

February 11, 1963: Poet Sylvia Plath, who struggles with clinical depression, dies by suicide, inhaling gas by placing her head inside an unlit gas stove. She is 30 years old.

February 11, 1989: George O’Hanlon, the voice actor portraying George Jetson, is recording his lines for Jetsons: The Movie. Just after finishing, he complains of a headache. He is taken to the hospital, where he dies of a stroke.

February 11, 2006: Then-U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney goes on a quail hunting trip near Corpus Christi, Texas. Failing to observe some safety rules, Cheney accidentally shoots his acquaintance Harry Milner Whittington in the face, neck, and chest with birdshot pellets. The pellets cause a collapsed lung and trigger a minor heart attack; Whittington is cared for in Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit. 

After being released from the hospital, Whittington issues a public statement saying that he knew hunting was an inherently risky activity, that he assumed the responsibility for that risk, and that he felt badly for the vice president. Cheney did not publicly apologize to Whittington for the shooting. Whittington passed away from an unrelated accident in 2023.

February 11, 2012: 48-year-old singer/actress Whitney Houston is found unresponsive in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Paramedics attempted CPR but are unable to revive her. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office attributes her death to atherosclerotic heart disease, cocaine use, and drowning.

February 1, 1891: Newspaper publisher Ignacio Martínez is assassinated by two men in Laredo, Texas, because they disagree with his newspaper’s criticism of Mexican president Porfirio Díaz.

February 1, 1974: The 25-story Joelma Building in São Paulo, Brazil, catches fire when an air conditioner malfunctions. An estimated 180 people lose their lives.

February 1, 1988: Heather Michele O'Rourke, the 12-year-old actress who starred in the Poltergeist horror movies, dies of septic shock due to stenosis of the intestine, which causes her to go into cardiac arrest. The previous day she’d been suffering from flu-like symptoms when she suddenly collapsed, prompting her parents to take her to the emergency room, where the narrowing of her intestine was discovered.

February 1, 2001: The Los Angeles funicular railway known as Angels Flight is built in 1915, discontinued in 1969, and restored in 1996. Using the original two cars, named Olivet and Sinai, the funicular has known maintenance issues in 2001, including a non-working emergency brake on the Sinai. As a result, the Sinai malfunctions while approaching the station at the top of the hill, descending back down the track and colliding with the Olivet. Seven people are injured; 83-year-old Leon Praport is killed.

January 16, 1862: A coal mining accident in Northumberland, England, kills 204 workers, some of them children as young as ten, and the pit pony. Most of them die of asphyxiation when the ventilation system breaks down, allowing the mine to fill with carbon monoxide.

January 16, 1942: TWA Flight 3 crashes into Potosi Mountain, Nevada, due to pilot error, killing all 22 people on board, including the actress Carole Lombard.

January 16, 1979: Ted Cassidy, the 6'9", deep-voiced actor who played Lurch on The Addams Family tv series, dies at age 46 from complications of surgery to remove a tumor from his heart. The tumor is a symptom of his acromegaly, the health condition responsible for his unusual height.

January 2, 2001: 30-year-old Frances Frost is attacked and killed by a mountain lion while skiing in Banff National Forest in Alberta, Canada.

January 2, 2006: Thirteen miners are trapped underground by a methane gas explosion at Sago Mine in Sago, West Virginia. When the miners are reached on January 4th, only 26-year-old Randal L. McCloy, Jr. has survived. McCloy suffers from severe carbon monoxide poisoning and physical trauma and requires months of physical therapy before he can talk and feed himself. He suffers permanent eyesight and hearing damage.
