Bummer November 8th
November 8, 1965: 52-year-old journalist Dorothy Kilgallen dies at home of an apparently accidental overdose of alcohol and barbiturates.
November 8, 1966: Anna Grace Gimmestad, who is 16 months old, dies of kidney failure. She became sick with severe food poisoning after drinking Odwalla brand unpasteurized apple juice contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Before this incident, which sickened an additional 70 people in the U.S. and Canada, the company had purchased apples that had fallen off of the apple trees, where they likely became contaminated with fecal waste from farm animals. Odwalla executives pled guilty to 16 counts of distributing an adulterated food product; the company was fined $1.5 million dollars (more than $2.9 million in 2023 dollars, adjusted for inflation) and began flash-pasteurizing its products.
November 8, 2020: Beloved Canadian-American game show host Alex Trebek dies of pancreatic cancer.
