Excerpt from "Hermit" by Lucy Felthouse:
Karen grimaced as she drove the car onto the Dungeness estate. She knew for a fact she was on said estate because she’d just passed a sign proudly proclaiming her whereabouts. Personally, she couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. It looked pretty damn grim, in her opinion.
She sighed. As soon as she’d been handed the assignment, she’d known it would be a bitch. The blog she wrote for, Universe of Quirk, published just that—anything quirky. This meant there was a huge amount of scope for articles for the site. Mostly it was about weird phenomena, picking out oddities in popular culture and freaky findings the world over. For the most part, Karen loved her job—she had a genuine interest in the bizarre and unusual, and a good nose for sniffing things out to write about. She didn’t often have to leave the comfort of her office chair to write her articles—the Internet gave her all the information she needed, at the touch of a button. And what she couldn’t gather via Google, she could find out by interviewing people. By email, phone or Skype.
But not Tom Pettyfer, it seemed. According to her notes, he was an ex-army dude who’d had some kind of meltdown, quit his job and moved to a shack in Dungeness. He was now a total hermit—hence the in-person interview. He had no telephone, let alone a computer or Internet access. Her boss had had to arrange the appointment by snail mail, for heaven’s sake! As such, there’d been no way of double checking he was still available. Karen hoped like hell he hadn’t suddenly decided to go out—leaving her with a long journey home with no article in the bag.
Continuing along the poorly-surfaced road, Karen slowed the car to a crawl—both to avoid damaging the rental vehicle and also to squint at the shacks she passed to find the one she was looking for. They all seemed to have names rather than numbers, which made the signs easier to read, but it was more difficult to find the right one, as there was no rhyme or reason to the layout. For all she knew, Tom Pettyfer’s shack could be the very last one on the lane.
Soon, she discovered that was not the case. Tom’s home was a strange-looking wooden building that wasn’t near to anything else. It sat alone in the shingle, a sparse garden-type thing surrounding it, and an ancient rusty car on the driveway. She supposed there was no point buying and running an expensive car if one didn’t go anywhere. Perhaps he just used it for errands and grocery shopping. He couldn’t shop online—so how else would he buy food and other necessities? How did he pay for those things if he never went out, didn’t have a job?
She reminded herself that this was the whole point of the trip. To meet this hermit and ask him questions, to find out why he lived the way he did, what made him tick. What had happened to make him choose this lifestyle?
Her car wouldn’t fit on the driveway behind his so she parked at the side of the road in front of his house, figuring traffic wouldn’t exactly be a problem anyway. Looking around, she was struck by the eeriness of the place, the loneliness. Add that to the ugly nuclear power station perched at the edge of the estate and you had a recipe for… well, hell on earth, really. And they called Kent the garden of England.
Pulling herself back to the task at hand, Karen grabbed her stuff then stepped out of the car, locking it and walking up to Tom’s shack. The sooner she got the interview over with, the sooner she could leave this desolate dump. Grey clouds overhead threatened rain, and she could hear the sea crashing mercilessly against the shore, the saltiness in the air filling her nostrils and coating her tongue. None of those things endeared her to the place.
Reaching the front door of Tom’s shack, she sucked in a deep breath and let it out, then straightened her stance. She was so used to working from home, lounging in her office chair as she researched and typed away, that she’d almost forgotten what it was like to meet someone on a professional basis. It was imperative to get this guy to trust her, so he’d open up and give her some good stuff for her piece. The project was a pain in the arse, but she couldn’t grumble too much—the site’s editor had made it worth her while financially.
Satisfied her body language was business-like yet friendly; Karen knocked on the door, and waited.
A couple of seconds later, the door opened. “Hi,” said a guy about her age, “you must be Karen, from Universe of Quirk.”
“Uh, yeah… that’s me.” So much for being professional. She hadn’t been expecting a god to answer the door. It had totally thrown her. “I mean, sorry, yes. I’m Karen Wilson. Lovely to meet you.” Holding out her hand, she tried not to swoon as the hottie reached out and gripped it, his own hand warm and dry, the shake firm but not crushing. Her belly did flip flops.

Review: 'Four: A Divergent Collection' by Veronica Roth
Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica RothMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I told myself I would take a hiatus from YA books after reading This Star Won't Go Out, but obviously my hiatus has already ended. So what if I'm occasionally reading the same book as my 10-year-old niece? Books like this one make me happy.
And sad.
Based on my personal enjoyment of this book, I'd give it five stars, but I think four stars are appropriate since it isn't going to mean nearly as much to someone who hasn't read the Divergent trilogy. I'd read the first story, "The Transfer," when it was available as an e-book for Nook. The first time I read it, it struck me as poignant and insightful. It was nice to read it again and be reminded of the small details that make up Four' character.
One thing that bothered me slightly: Roth describes both Amar and Zeke as "dark-skinned." Amar is Middle Eastern/North African and Zeke is La Raza. Surely they don't have the exact same skin tone. Is Roth trying to say that Tobias, her narrator, divides the whole world into "dark-skinned" and "light-skinned" people? That's not very Abnegation. Perhaps Roth just didn't realize she could use more rich and varied words to tell us what Zeke and Amar look like. Rookie mistake, maybe.
The other two stories that take place before Four meets Tris, "The Initiate" and "The Son," also struck me as being poignant, especially where they address Four's complicated relationship with his mother.
Then, in "The Traitor," Tris appears. Why did I imagine it wouldn't be painful to revisit Tris and Four's relationship? I kind of felt like my heart was caught in a vise as I read some of Four's first impressions - his first stirrings of love - towards his soul-mate. At the same time, spending some more time with FourTris is a wonderful gift from Ms. Roth. The third of the three "exclusive scenes" at the end is especially romantic, if you're into that kind of thing.
Which I totally am.
The copy I read was on loan from my local library, although I wish it could live in my house. When the Collector's Edition of Divergent comes out (October 21, 2014), I'm buying that for myself. I might even pre-order it. Heaven help me, I loved the Divergent series, and it's a world I'm not yet willing to leave.

I'm not sure why it happens, but when I focus just right, I can slow time. Things around me become lighter somehow, and I almost feel the tiny particles of energy spinning inside of them. The thing is, having the ability to transform the world around you isn't all it's cracked up to be -- especially when you are running from the Valencia without any deodorant.

Excerpt:
Finally, Nikki and Sonya found the turning off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile that they needed. They’d expected a road, but Mary King’s Close was nothing more than a narrow passageway that looked like it led to the next street along. Glancing at one another, it seemed both girls suspected they were in the wrong place—despite the name of the alleyway—but as they headed along the close, they came across more signage and discovered they were wrong. The signs proclaimed that they were indeed at The Real Mary King’s Close, and this time they exchanged a relieved look and moved inside the tourist attraction.
After paying their money, they were put into a group that was already waiting, and after a few minutes was called to attention by a member of staff. The young man, dressed in incredibly old-fashioned attire welcomed them to the attraction and gave some brief information about what they should expect from the tour, as well as some health and safety spiel.
Then they were ushered deeper into the building and down some stairs. Another peculiarly-dressed actor met them and gave his talk. The group soon learned that Mary King’s Close had been a town of sorts, a collection of streets and houses, named after the most prominent local—Mary King. It had functioned well, this part of Edinburgh—in its day. But it had also befallen hard times and tragedy, including the Black Death. It was rumoured that people affected had been bricked into their houses to prevent the disease spreading further. It had never been confirmed nor denied, but the very idea sent a shiver down Nikki’s spine.
As they advanced into the underground town—now covered over by modern Edinburgh—they learned more about the inhabitants, their lives and, in some cases, their deaths. By the time they were shown the shrine of a young girl, covered with offerings both old and new, Nikki was clinging onto Sonya’s arm so hard that the other girl gave her a nudge.
“Oi, you’re hurting me! What’s the matter with you?”
“Sorry,” Nikki replied. “I’m getting a little creeped out, that’s all.”
“A little? The way you’re squeezing my arm, I’m beginning to think you’ve seen a ghost or something.”
“I said I’m sorry. God. Don’t you think it’s spooky down here?”
A meaningful glance from the tour guide shut them up. Nikki dropped her hand to Sonya’s and held it. The group continued through the subterranean labyrinth, listening to more tales of the past, the things that had happened within the very place they stood, over four hundred years ago.
Some periods of total darkness with recounts of history later, and Nikki was a nervous wreck. She’d always had an overactive imagination, and although she’d never seen a ghost—despite Sonya’s words—she believed in them and was really succumbing to the eeriness of the ancient place. She had gotten to the stage where she fully expected to see the spectre of little Annie—having left the site of her shrine—peering around a corner, beckoning to her. Or the chilly finger of a plague victim trailing down the back of her neck. She grew so paralyzed with fear that she fell silent and didn’t take in a word of the rest of the excursion—simply holding onto Sonya’s hand as they walked through the rooms and tunnels.
When they eventually emerged into the outside world once more, Nikki heaved a sigh of relief. “Sonya, darling, take me for a drink, now. A stiff one. A double vodka and coke sounds perfect right now. Maybe even a triple.”
“Were you really that scared?” The other woman looked disbelieving.
“What do you mean, were? I still bloody am. I’m sure I’d have found it interesting if I wasn’t so busy being terrified. I’m surprised I didn’t wet myself.”
“Aww, babe.” Sonya pulled the other girl into her arms. “I didn’t realise you hated it that much. We could have left if I’d known.”
“No,” Nikki shook her head. “It’s okay, I didn’t want to ruin it for you. I just got to the stage where I blocked it all out. But I’d still really like a drink, if you don’t mind.”
Sonya gently pushed Nikki against the wall of the alleyway and hugged her once more. “Okay, we’ll go for a drink soon. Let me hold you for a few minutes, first.”
The other girl said nothing, just relaxed into her lover’s embrace and slowly, very slowly, felt the fear ebbing away. With not a small amount of horror, she realised that she was turned on. Her knickers were damp and sticking to her, and the heat emanating from between her legs was unmistakable. What the actual fuck? She kept quiet, instead nuzzling into Sonya’s neck and pressing a kiss to the delicate skin there.
“Ooh,” Sonya said, shuddering, “that was lovely. What was that for?”
“For being nice.” Nikki’s voice was muffled, and she kissed her girlfriend again.
“Hey,” Sonya said, grabbing Nikki’s hands and squeezing them, “you’d better stop that, otherwise I’m going to get turned on. And that’s the last thing you want right now. I’m trying to be understanding here, sweetheart.”
Nikki came to the conclusion that she didn’t mind if Sonya got turned on, not at all. In fact, some sexy fun might just take her mind off the creepy underground place they’d just visited. It was damn weird that being scared had turned her on, but the more she thought about it, the more she figured it kinda made sense. Nothing, in her opinion, was scarier than death, and the French word for orgasm translated to ‘the little death’—so it was widely accepted that sex and death were connected. Sex was about life, death was about, well, death. So, in an attempt to stop thinking about things that confused the hell out of her, she was going to embrace life, wholeheartedly. And if that meant experiencing the little death, then so be it.
“I don’t mind,” she whispered into Sonya’s ear.
“What do you mean, sweetie?” Sonya replied, grabbing her shoulders and moving her back so she could look at her face. “You don’t mind what?”
“I don’t mind you getting turned on.”

New in Paperback: 'The Erotica Anthology' by Erin O'Riordan and Tit Elingtin
My first boyfriend, Shane, asked to borrow my car one weekend. He didn’t tell me where he was going. I knew right away that this wasn’t a good idea. I realized over the next week or so that Shane wasn’t a good idea. I broke up with him.
This levelheadedness when it came to the opposite sex has served me well. My second boyfriend, Phil, kept eyeballing my sister Francis. I gave him the boot. Phil was followed by Victor. Victor had a good run, but I also knew that the end would come sooner or later. When he left, I was sad, but not devastated.
After Victor came Steve. Steve stole my ATM card one weekend. I testified against him. He’s now serving six years on a similar charge.
I, Liv Stenke, am not a foolish woman. I’m not given to falling so madly in love with a man that I can’t see his flaws. At the age of twenty-eight, I was determined that no matter how fine a man’s body, no matter how earth-shattering the sex, I wouldn’t lose my head.
This was before I’d heard of Dante Sugar.
The first time I heard the name Dante Sugar, I was at the county records building on business. I was in the ladies’ room, freshening my rock-candy-pink lipstick in the gold-rimmed mirror over the speckled marble sink. Two women who worked in the county assessor’s office sat in adjoining stalls, apparently not realizing that I was there.
“Guess who was at the concert in the park last night?” the first said. “Dante Sugar.”
I wasn’t even sure she’d heard her right. Dante, as in the thirteenth-century Italian poet? Sugar, as in the stuff you sprinkle on your grapefruit in the morning? What kind of name was that?
The second broke out in a lascivious guffaw. “Oh my God,” she said.
The first woman chortled. “What’s so sweet about Dante Sugar, anyway?”
“Oh my God,” said the second woman, apparently of limited vocabulary. “How about his sweet little ass? Or that sweet little sports car he drives around in? You’ve got to be kidding me. How could you look at Dante Sugar and not just want to ride him until you break it off? How can you even hear his name and not fall totally in love with him?”
“I heard his name,” I said. That shut the women up quickly. “And I’m not totally in love with him. As a matter of fact, this Dante Sugar sounds like an arrogant prick.”
The name was stuck in my head, though.
Thus begins "Herbert," the first story in The Erotica Anthology by Erin O'Riordan (your humble blogger here) and her husband, Tit Elingtin.
Naked Honesty Time: I gave this book the wrong title. I consider myself fairly literate and well-read, but no one ever told me that “anthology” meant “collection of multiple authors’ works” until AFTER I published this collection at CafePress.com. The original title remains, even though this isn’t technically an anthology at all. It’s simply a collection of some of my works.
Book Blurb: Erin O'Riordan has contributed smart, honest short stories, articles and film reviews to Playgirl, Hustler Fantasies, and quality webzines including Clean Sheets, The Erotic Woman, and Oysters & Chocolate. This collection showcases some of the short stories, along with an excerpt of her full length novel, Beltane (Pagan Spirits Book One), from Eternal Press.
The Stories
Herbert: Exclusive to this anthology, a dark and sexy faery tale
Beltane: The original short story of Pagan magic that launched the Pagan Spirits erotic romance series
Anatomy Lesson: An erotic tribute to Our Bodies, Ourselves.
900: Gender-bendy tale in which a bisexual woman has a phone sex encounter with a gay-for-pay man
Innocent: Zach meets his virgin bride-to-be for the first time and finds out she isn't so innocent after all
Going With the Flow: The one that was published in Playgirl: a kayak ride with a happy ending
New to this edition of the "anthology:"
Cinnamon Honey Bear: Submissive husband, mild bondage, kitchen stuffs used in bedroom
Tile Job: Girl only
Experimental: American Tori is a scientist; Welshman Quill is her experimental subject

About the Story
Title
of your story, main characters and what it is about?
My story is titled “Heart of Stone” and it
features Sabra Pearson, a journalist who falls in love with Griffin Lux, a
multi-billionaire with a dark secret. An afterhours incident brings them closer
than they could ever imagine.
Where
did you get the inspiration for your story?
I started thinking about shifters and wanted
to write about something a little different. I love gargoyles and Grayson and
Sabra kind of popped into my head. The rest is history. And hopefully,
enjoyable reading.
Favorite
line:
His moist sigh in her ear made her wet between her thighs.
“Make a stone of your heart, Sabra.” Dear God, let home be right around the
corner. “Then make a fire of your body.”
About the Author
How
long have you been writing and how did you become a writer?
I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. I
started consciously working toward publication after I graduated high school.
It took years of hard work, but I’m finally achieving my goals.
Have
you got anything else out/due out?
I have recently submitted another short story
for Breathless Press’ Crimson anthology. I am very excited to think what’s on
the horizon for me as an author.
Top
tip for writing/publishing?
Read. You were a reader before you were a
writer and chances are, it’s why you’re a writer. If you write, call yourself a
writer. Don’t wait for others to validate what you do. Keep at it. There’s
something to be said for the breed of people that become authors. With the
exception of the occasional overnight success, most of us will shed various
amounts of blood, sweat and tears before we reach our goals. Do not give up.
What will set you apart from the next writer is what you do after you file away
that rejection letter.
Just for Fun
If you were a shifter what animal would you change into?
If I had the choice to be
any shifter, I think I would be a werewolf. I feel a special kinship to wolves
and always felt the werewolf was the unsung hero of many a horror movie.
Favorite
food and drink?
Other than Coca-Cola, I love iced tea. If I
could have one drink for the rest of my life, that would be it. I love food of all
kinds. As a Texan, Tex-Mex is close to my heart (or should I say, stomach?). I
adore homemade spaghetti and meatballs, pot roast, a good Chinese buffet and
love sushi. Sweets are my weakness, dark chocolate especially. Brownies are a
gift from God.
Favorite
movie?
I’m a dyed-in-the-wool horror buff. I have a
large collection of horror DVDs and am constantly on the lookout for more. I’m
fond of good science fiction, too.
Boxers
or Briefs?
It’s not the package, it’s what’s in it.
Finish
this sentence: I have never...
been any further west than San Antonio.
Seriously. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the East. I’d love to visit
Colorado, Arizona, California and Washington.

About the Story
Title
of your story, main characters and what it is about?
Hi. Barely There is the name of my shifter
story. The two main characters, a lone werewolf, Bill Fang, and a single mom
werebear Fern Bextrum, come together in a dangerous situation. As they talk,
sparks fly and the rest…You'll have to read the book. But I will say, it's HOT
HOT HOT!
Note: This is a bit of a prequel for The
Ulfric's Mates and introduces the werebears and Bill whom we will continue to
see in the series.
Where
did you get the inspiration for your story?
I had a contract for The Ulfric's Mate and
used this as an awesome chance to fill in some side stories. The kind I always
want to know about when I'm reading my favorite series.
Favorite

She came hard, screaming into the
forest, ending on a small growl of her own as he kept pounding into her, his
engorged dick like an engine piston that was revved too high.
About the Author
How
long have you been writing and how did you become a writer?
I've been writing all my life. I used to tell
my siblings stories. But, I became serious about 4 years ago and started
learning about the life of a writer.
Have
you got anything else out/due out?
The Ulfric's Mate (Book 1 in The War of the
Weres Series) is already out. I have an erotica, Rick Sexed up the Doc coming
out November 23 and I'm furiously trying to finish another short side story
that'll hopefully come out this year.
Top
tip for writing/publishing?
I have two, depending on you. One, NEVER GIVE
UP, and two, READ. READ. Read.

If
you were a shifter what animal would you change into?
Favorite
food and drink?
Chocolate and caffeine. But fruit, vegetables,
and red meat are also dearly loved.
Favorite
movie?
This is so hard for me to answer. My favorite
movie depends on my mood and who I'm watching it with. But some of my favorites
are The Princess Bride, Man from Snowy River, Serenity, The Phantom of the
Opera, Moulin Rouge, Repo Man: Rock Opera, Zombie, and The Underworld. There
are plenty others. (Star Wars, Star Trek—think geek and I generally like it :D)
Boxers
or Briefs?
Commando :D

Spice Up Your Valentine's Day With 'Indecent Encounters'
It's here! Evernight Publishing has just released Indecent Encounters, an anthology of male-male-female menage fiction.
Official book blurb:
"Sometimes a woman needs more than a lover…
Independent, lustful ladies find pleasure and intrigue with more than one man, from a scandalous vacation in Australia, to a forced seduction at a cabin in the woods. A witch needs to break a shameful spell, and an older woman slakes her sexual needs with two younger men. Cougars purr with unrequited desire and werewolves compete for the love of their mate. Satisfaction is just a sigh away as a surgeon bends the rules for her patient, and an over-stressed boss finds more than a little peace with secret admirers.
Find out what wicked delights await you with Indecent Encounters."
There are 8 authors in this anthology: Amarinda Jones, Delilah Hunt, Erin O'Riordan (me!), Pepper Anthony, Ashlynn Monroe, Tessa Monroe, Melissa Hosack and Angelina Rain.
In "Post Op," surgeon Maggie Keller walks in on her patient, Joey, sharing an intimate moment with his roommate, Max. Dr. Maggie can't stop thinking about the gorgeous duo. She bends the rules of doctor-patient decorum to pay them a visit.
Indecent Encounters is $6.50 from Evernight Publishing. A print version is coming soon. View it at http://www.evernightpublishing.com/products/Indecent-Encounters.html (now out of print).

'Dream Lover' is a dream collection of paranormal erotica
Dream Lover (Cleis Press, May 2011), edited by Kristina Wright, is a collection of diverse, elegantly erotic tales of paranormal romance. It's my favorite genre, I can't get enough, and this collection is an especially sweet one. Its arrival on my doorstep made a perfect pre-Valentine's Day gift.
The anthology begins with "Love Resurrection" by Justine Elyot. In it, the ghost of a long-neglected Victorian poet haunts the academic who comes to his ancestral home to research him. The tale is perfectly imagined. A. D. R. Forte's "Rainmaker" is another well-crafted tale, so vividly so sensual it feels like the air before a thunderstorm. Kristina Lloyd contributes "Living Off Lovers," an atmospheric piece in which an apartment building becomes a character and a woman lusts for a man about whom she knows only a name, "Peter." Sacchi Green's "Freeing the Demon" is a startlingly beautiful gargoyle story.
Given my personal preference for wolf tales, it may come as no surprise my personal favorite in this collection is Alana Noel Voth's "Moongirl Meets the Wolf Man." It's always wonderful when a lone wolf meets her one true mate. The vampire tale, "Lust as Old as Us" by Madeline Moore, puts a fascinating twist on the teenage vampire genre.
These are only a few of the stories in Dream Lover. There's much, more more in its 240 pages.
The Giveaway: Open to residents of the U.S. ages 18 and up ONLY. One randomly chosen winner will receive EITHER my paperback Advance Reading Copy (ARC) of Dream Lover OR, because my copy is a little shopworn, the winner may instead choose one of these Cleis Press titles:

Hide and Seek: Erotic Tales of Voyeurs and Exhibitionists

"Bomb Pop" is re-released by Noble Romance. Join me at nobleauthors.blogspot.com
Once upon a time, there was a contemporary erotic romance called "Bomb Pop." Released on the 4th of July, 2009, this plucky little e-book garnered some sweet reviews before the publisher went out of business. It disappeared from Amazon's Kindle store.
Now it's back. Noble Romance re-released "Bomb Pop" at midnight. Join me at the NR Author's Blog January 31, 2011. I'll be popping in and out all day to blog, answer your questions, etc.
Bomb Pop (n): 1. A classic American frozen treat, a fruit-flavored popsicle in the red, white and blue of the American flag. 2. The story of Gretchen Malone, a second-grade teacher who normally keeps her wits about her, especially when it comes to workplace romances. That is, until hunky kindergarten teacher Thom Reno brings up a long-buried memory from summers past and a repressed schoolgirl crush along with it.
"What happens when you get a teacher who equates men to a 'bomb pop?' A short story so steamy you will have to fan yourself when you’re finished. 'Bomb Pop' is a great read! This is the first story I have read by Ms. O’Riordan but it won’t be my last. She is definitely an author to keep an eye out for." ~Stephanie Wilson (Manic Readers)
"If you're looking for a quick read that’s sweeter than candy and hotter than an August summer day, then 'Bomb Pop' by Erin O’Riordan is for you. Filled with sugary sweet metaphors that combine sex, popsicles and ice cream sundaes, this story will leave you craving a meltingly hot round of sweaty sex followed something icy cold and syrupy sweet to cool you off." ~Roxanne Rhoads (OystersAndChocolate.com)
"Well written, agreeable to read, inventive by times … and most important of all: erotic. I can only congratulate the author for her taste and sensitivity in writing and style." ~Lena Vanelslander (Facebook)
UPDATE (January 2015): Find "Bomb Pop" at my Etsy shop, Writer's Brain Has Wings.
