'Amazons: Sexy Tales of Strong Women' Edited by M. Christian and Sage Vivant

"Sexy Tales of Strong Women." What's not to love about that subtitle? Editors M. Christian and Sage Vivant chose well, because this is not only good erotic writing but good writing, period. Not all of it is explicitly erotic, by the way. Some of it is gently suggestive. For added fun, each tale begins with a quote from an extraordinary real-life woman, from Bette Davis to Pamela Anderson to Barbra Streisand.

My favorite stories in this anthology were:

"Bullbitch 8.0" by C.B. Potts. Cowgirls are all Amazons anyway, right? But Lynette is a special -breed of cowgirl - she's a rodeo bull rider.

"The Spear of Janice Kienan" by Chris Bridges. It shows just how deeply the modern woman can get in touch with her inner Amazon.

If only it were possible to combine Chris Bridges the erotica writer with Chris "Ludacris" Bridges the rapper/actor, because that combined guy would be a hell of an erotic songwriter.

"Amazon" by M. Christian. A sexy tale of Sapphic love among burlesque dancers, one of whom has dwarfism, and the twist of the story is that the shortest woman is the most Amazonian of all.

"Punk Syster Morris" by Bryn Colvin. This was my second-favorite story of the book, about an unsuspecting man who thinks he's only going to a rock show with his buddy and ends up finding so much more.

"The Hands of a Princess" by Catherine Lundoff*. Viking warrior Commander Agnes "The Bloody" Helensdottir will go to any length to serve her king, even it means pleasing his like-minded daughter.

"Sex With Ducks" by Hannah Strom-Martin. Worry not: Ducks is a man's name. He's a quirky writer, but our narrator learns how to exploit his hidden desires. Best phrase:

"When dealing with writers it breaks down like this: a regular writer is your average everyday megalomaniac. Like every artist, there's a part of them that believes--nay, knows--the world turns for them. Most are harmless. Some are obnoxious. Some are Bret Easton Ellis."

Technically, my editor-inner-ear tells me, it should say, "A part of them believes--nay, knows--the world turns for them, as does a part of every artist."However, that does not flow as smoothly.

"The Girl From Pellucidar" by Jason Rubis. Purporting to be about a woman who attempts to make peace with her ex-boyfriend's unpredictable new girlfriend, the story then takes an outrageous turn and ends up much, much better than I could have predicted.

"Thalea of the Mountain" by Kristina Wright. This has the mythic, timeless quality of a really good fairy tale, one that could have come from anywhere in the world. It's beautiful written, but then again, I'd expect nothing different from Wright.

"The Bearded Lady" by Madeline de Chambrey. My favorite of the anthology, and it's one of the merely suggestive rather than explicitly erotic ones. It's about the deep connection between a man who's in love with a woman who barely acknowledges him, as he nurses her through breast cancer. She survives, the ending is triumphant, and I think I actually pumped my fist as I read the last page. Also, a woman with a beard may not be considered traditionally beautiful by Western societies, but de Chambrey manages to convey precisely how this "unfeminine" feature is part of our heroine's allure.

"Blue Girl" by Kathleen Bradean**. Dystopian erotica in a Puritanical society, but one that's completely imaginable. Damn fine writing in this one.

"Sixteen Hands" by Paula L. Fleming. The heroine of this tale is a jockey, and she's an Amazon when she's on her horse. Her unexpected lover fits the more traditional Amazonian profile. This tale is full of passion and tenderness that really resonated with me.

"Legend" by Sage Vivant. This one explores the gap between reality and perception, and it's funny.

I bought this book with my own funds and was not obligated to review it in any way.

* Catherine Lundoff and I both have stories in Like a God's Kiss: Erotic Mythological Tales.

Excerpt from "Hermit" by Lucy Felthouse:

Karen grimaced as she drove the car onto the Dungeness estate. She knew for a fact she was on said estate because she’d just passed a sign proudly proclaiming her whereabouts. Personally, she couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. It looked pretty damn grim, in her opinion.

She sighed. As soon as she’d been handed the assignment, she’d known it would be a bitch. The blog she wrote for, Universe of Quirk, published just that—anything quirky. This meant there was a huge amount of scope for articles for the site. Mostly it was about weird phenomena, picking out oddities in popular culture and freaky findings the world over. For the most part, Karen loved her job—she had a genuine interest in the bizarre and unusual, and a good nose for sniffing things out to write about. She didn’t often have to leave the comfort of her office chair to write her articles—the Internet gave her all the information she needed, at the touch of a button. And what she couldn’t gather via Google, she could find out by interviewing people. By email, phone or Skype.

But not Tom Pettyfer, it seemed. According to her notes, he was an ex-army dude who’d had some kind of meltdown, quit his job and moved to a shack in Dungeness. He was now a total hermit—hence the in-person interview. He had no telephone, let alone a computer or Internet access. Her boss had had to arrange the appointment by snail mail, for heaven’s sake! As such, there’d been no way of double checking he was still available. Karen hoped like hell he hadn’t suddenly decided to go out—leaving her with a long journey home with no article in the bag.

Continuing along the poorly-surfaced road, Karen slowed the car to a crawl—both to avoid damaging the rental vehicle and also to squint at the shacks she passed to find the one she was looking for. They all seemed to have names rather than numbers, which made the signs easier to read, but it was more difficult to find the right one, as there was no rhyme or reason to the layout. For all she knew, Tom Pettyfer’s shack could be the very last one on the lane.

Soon, she discovered that was not the case. Tom’s home was a strange-looking wooden building that wasn’t near to anything else. It sat alone in the shingle, a sparse garden-type thing surrounding it, and an ancient rusty car on the driveway. She supposed there was no point buying and running an expensive car if one didn’t go anywhere. Perhaps he just used it for errands and grocery shopping. He couldn’t shop online—so how else would he buy food and other necessities? How did he pay for those things if he never went out, didn’t have a job?

She reminded herself that this was the whole point of the trip. To meet this hermit and ask him questions, to find out why he lived the way he did, what made him tick. What had happened to make him choose this lifestyle?

Her car wouldn’t fit on the driveway behind his so she parked at the side of the road in front of his house, figuring traffic wouldn’t exactly be a problem anyway. Looking around, she was struck by the eeriness of the place, the loneliness. Add that to the ugly nuclear power station perched at the edge of the estate and you had a recipe for… well, hell on earth, really. And they called Kent the garden of England.

Pulling herself back to the task at hand, Karen grabbed her stuff then stepped out of the car, locking it and walking up to Tom’s shack. The sooner she got the interview over with, the sooner she could leave this desolate dump. Grey clouds overhead threatened rain, and she could hear the sea crashing mercilessly against the shore, the saltiness in the air filling her nostrils and coating her tongue. None of those things endeared her to the place.

Reaching the front door of Tom’s shack, she sucked in a deep breath and let it out, then straightened her stance. She was so used to working from home, lounging in her office chair as she researched and typed away, that she’d almost forgotten what it was like to meet someone on a professional basis. It was imperative to get this guy to trust her, so he’d open up and give her some good stuff for her piece. The project was a pain in the arse, but she couldn’t grumble too much—the site’s editor had made it worth her while financially.

Satisfied her body language was business-like yet friendly; Karen knocked on the door, and waited.

A couple of seconds later, the door opened. “Hi,” said a guy about her age, “you must be Karen, from Universe of Quirk.”

“Uh, yeah… that’s me.” So much for being professional. She hadn’t been expecting a god to answer the door. It had totally thrown her. “I mean, sorry, yes. I’m Karen Wilson. Lovely to meet you.” Holding out her hand, she tried not to swoon as the hottie reached out and gripped it, his own hand warm and dry, the shake firm but not crushing. Her belly did flip flops.

Even More Tales of Biblical Terror: Dybbuk Press Plans 'King David and the Spiders From Mars'

This is my 665th post on this blog. You know what that means - the next one will be #666. It's too bad I couldn't get THIS to be the 666th post on account of its Biblical theme.

In 2010, I read and reviewed the Dybbuk Press horror anthology She Nailed a Stake Through His Head. It's an awesome read. I liked the book so much, editor Tim Lieder decided to use my review as the editorial review that appears on Amazon and Goodreads.

Now, Dybbuk Press is getting ready to publish a second anthology on the same Biblical horror theme. A short blurb by Dybbuk Press publisher/editor Tim Lieder reads:

"I am both the publisher and the editor of the anthology. This book and the previous Bible-themed horror collection - She Nailed a Stake Through His Head - are inspired by my love of the literary Bible studies as pioneered by Robert Alter and Erich Auerbach. When I first started publishing books through Dybbuk Press, I knew that I wanted to edit a book of Bible-themed stories because regardless of one's faith or lack thereof, the Bible is a great literary work with tight plotting, an economy of language, sudden bursts of violence and poetry as well as some of the most memorable characters in Western literature."

The authors and tales are all lined up - the small press is now seeking a little crowdfunding assistance. If you care to, please watch this short video from Tim.

Also, I think you should follow Tim on Facebook because, well, I think he's awesome. You won't see him around on the Sabbath or on Jewish holidays, because he's observant.

'Leather Ever After' - BDSM Fairy Tale Retellings, Edited by Sassafras Lowrey

Erin O'Riordan here - yesterday I received an e-mail from queer author and editor Sassafras Lowrey about her latest release, Leather Ever After. I'm sharing her info because I love so many things about this anthology: the fairy tale theme, the witches, the playful erotic kinks.

Would that I had time to review it - but that wouldn't be fair, since I already have so many unread e-books in my review queue. So check it out, and let me know what you think about it!

Sassafras Lowrey writes:

Leather Ever After brings together 17 incredible kinky storytellers with a foreword by Laura Antoniou to pervert and delight beloved fairy tales - classics, and some of the more obscure alike.

Leather Ever After anthology:

Edited by Sassafras Lowrey, Published by Ravenous Romance
Forward by Laura Antoniou

Once upon a time, in a dungeon far, far away the kinkiest writers in the land were summoned to pervert beloved fairy tales with tales of dominance, submission, bondage and surrender. In these stories twisted
princesses take control of submissive princes, witches play with power and fairy tales come to life in our homes and dungeons…

In Leather Ever After, celebrated queer author Sassafras Lowrey brings together some of the most beloved leather writers in an enchanting collection published by Ravenous Romance.

New in Paperback: 'The Erotica Anthology' by Erin O'Riordan and Tit Elingtin

My first boyfriend, Shane, asked to borrow my car one weekend.  He didn’t tell me where he was going.  I knew right away that this wasn’t a good idea.  I realized over the next week or so that Shane wasn’t a good idea.  I broke up with him.
This levelheadedness when it came to the opposite sex has served me well.  My second boyfriend, Phil, kept eyeballing my sister Francis.  I gave him the boot.  Phil was followed by Victor.  Victor had a good run, but I also knew that the end would come sooner or later.  When he left, I was sad, but not devastated.
After Victor came Steve.  Steve stole my ATM card one weekend.  I testified against him.  He’s now serving six years on a similar charge.
I, Liv Stenke, am not a foolish woman.  I’m not given to falling so madly in love with a man that I can’t see his flaws.  At the age of twenty-eight, I was determined that no matter how fine a man’s body, no matter how earth-shattering the sex, I wouldn’t lose my head.
This was before I’d heard of Dante Sugar.
The first time I heard the name Dante Sugar, I was at the county records building on business.  I was in the ladies’ room, freshening my rock-candy-pink lipstick in the gold-rimmed mirror over the speckled marble sink.  Two women who worked in the county assessor’s office sat in adjoining stalls, apparently not realizing that I was there.
“Guess who was at the concert in the park last night?” the first said.  “Dante Sugar.”
I wasn’t even sure she’d heard her right.  Dante, as in the thirteenth-century Italian poet?  Sugar, as in the stuff you sprinkle on your grapefruit in the morning?  What kind of name was that?
The second broke out in a lascivious guffaw.  “Oh my God,” she said.
The first woman chortled.  “What’s so sweet about Dante Sugar, anyway?”
“Oh my God,” said the second woman, apparently of limited vocabulary.  “How about his sweet little ass?  Or that sweet little sports car he drives around in?  You’ve got to be kidding me.  How could you look at Dante Sugar and not just want to ride him until you break it off?  How can you even hear his name and not fall totally in love with him?”
“I heard his name,” I said.  That shut the women up quickly.  “And I’m not totally in love with him.  As a matter of fact, this Dante Sugar sounds like an arrogant prick.”
The name was stuck in my head, though.

Thus begins "Herbert," the first story in The Erotica Anthology by Erin O'Riordan (your humble blogger here) and her husband, Tit Elingtin.

Naked Honesty TimeI gave this book the wrong title. I consider myself fairly literate and well-read, but no one ever told me that “anthology” meant “collection of multiple authors’ works” until AFTER I published this collection at CafePress.com. The original title remains, even though this isn’t technically an anthology at all. It’s simply a collection of some of my works.

Book BlurbErin O'Riordan has contributed smart, honest short stories, articles and film reviews to Playgirl, Hustler Fantasies, and quality webzines including Clean Sheets, The Erotic Woman, and Oysters & Chocolate. This collection showcases some of the short stories, along with an excerpt of her full length novel, Beltane (Pagan Spirits Book One), from Eternal Press.

The Stories

Herbert:  Exclusive to this anthology, a dark and sexy faery tale
Beltane: The original short story of Pagan magic that launched the Pagan Spirits erotic romance series
Anatomy Lesson: An erotic tribute to Our Bodies, Ourselves
900: Gender-bendy tale in which a bisexual woman has a phone sex encounter with a gay-for-pay man
Innocent: Zach meets his virgin bride-to-be for the first time and finds out she isn't so innocent after all
Going With the Flow: The one that was published in Playgirl: a kayak ride with a happy ending

New to this edition of the "anthology:"

Cinnamon Honey Bear: Submissive husband, mild bondage, kitchen stuffs used in bedroom
Tile Job: Girl only
Experimental: American Tori is a scientist; Welshman Quill is her experimental subject

Other Editions: We published this first at CafePress, and you can still get that print version - but it COSTS MORE and has FEWER STORIES. You can also get the shorter version as an e-book from Smashwords for $.99.

Get the print one from CreateSpace. It's good. You'll like it.

Naked Honesty Time, Pt. 2: I need to sell a lot of books, more than I've ever sold before. As my husband stated on his blog the other day (May 23), he wants to avoid going on disability for his kidney disease. You might see us standing on a street corner with a sign that says, "Buy my books." This is my virtual sign. Buy our books!

Favorites from 'Hunger: A Feast of Sensual Tales of Sex and Gastronomy'

Some of my favorite stories from HUNGER A Feast of Sensual Tales about Sex and Gastronomy, edited by M. Christian and Alyn Rossellini (other than "Hungry Things," the one I wrote, of course):

I mentioned the other day that Susan St. Aubin's "A Meal" is a nice opener featuring brave writing and Dominic Santi's "Jeb's Wife" is some very sexy writing.

I also enjoyed "A is for Apple" by Jessica Lennox. It's about a playful sexual encounter between two women who've just met, involving a little light bondage. At first I thought the ending was a little abrupt, but when I got to the very last line and it suggested the lovers would play together again, I decided I liked the ending.

"Happy Birthday to Me" by Heidi Champa starts off on a melancholy note, at the unwelcome birthday party of a man who's lost his girlfriend. Marcus is sad, but the cake and the caterer who baked it make him start to feel a little better. She runs out of cake, but the lack can be made up for in other ways.

Billierosie's "Fruits de Mer" is gorgeous, gorgeous writing. Not a single word is out of place.

This is not to say that I didn't enjoy the other tales in the anthology, but everyone has their own preferences, and these are the ones that particularly catered to mine. I do happen to have a favorite, though. It's "Un Apetito Robusto" by Cesar Sanchez Zapata. Set at a family-owned small vineyard in Italy, the tale is romantic, evocative and just plain delizioso.

Next I'll be reading an anthology to which I did not contribute: Seductress: Erotic Tales of Immortal Desire, edited by D.L. King. The theme is "succubi." Good stuff, lots of femme dom. Giselle Renarde has stories in both.

About the Story

Title of your story, main characters and what it is about?

My story is titled “Heart of Stone” and it features Sabra Pearson, a journalist who falls in love with Griffin Lux, a multi-billionaire with a dark secret. An afterhours incident brings them closer than they could ever imagine.

Where did you get the inspiration for your story?

I started thinking about shifters and wanted to write about something a little different. I love gargoyles and Grayson and Sabra kind of popped into my head. The rest is history. And hopefully, enjoyable reading.

Favorite line:

His moist sigh in her ear made her wet between her thighs. “Make a stone of your heart, Sabra.” Dear God, let home be right around the corner. “Then make a fire of your body.”

About the Author

How long have you been writing and how did you become a writer?

I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. I started consciously working toward publication after I graduated high school. It took years of hard work, but I’m finally achieving my goals.

Have you got anything else out/due out?

I have recently submitted another short story for Breathless Press’ Crimson anthology. I am very excited to think what’s on the horizon for me as an author.

Top tip for writing/publishing?

Read. You were a reader before you were a writer and chances are, it’s why you’re a writer. If you write, call yourself a writer. Don’t wait for others to validate what you do. Keep at it. There’s something to be said for the breed of people that become authors. With the exception of the occasional overnight success, most of us will shed various amounts of blood, sweat and tears before we reach our goals. Do not give up. What will set you apart from the next writer is what you do after you file away that rejection letter.

Just for Fun

If you were a shifter what animal would you change into?

If I had the choice to be any shifter, I think I would be a werewolf. I feel a special kinship to wolves and always felt the werewolf was the unsung hero of many a horror movie.

Favorite food and drink?

Other than Coca-Cola, I love iced tea. If I could have one drink for the rest of my life, that would be it. I love food of all kinds. As a Texan, Tex-Mex is close to my heart (or should I say, stomach?). I adore homemade spaghetti and meatballs, pot roast, a good Chinese buffet and love sushi. Sweets are my weakness, dark chocolate especially. Brownies are a gift from God.

Favorite movie?

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool horror buff. I have a large collection of horror DVDs and am constantly on the lookout for more. I’m fond of good science fiction, too.

Boxers or Briefs?

It’s not the package, it’s what’s in it.

Finish this sentence: I have never...

been any further west than San Antonio. Seriously. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the East. I’d love to visit Colorado, Arizona, California and Washington.

About the Story

Title of your story, main characters and what it is about?

Hi. Barely There is the name of my shifter story. The two main characters, a lone werewolf, Bill Fang, and a single mom werebear Fern Bextrum, come together in a dangerous situation. As they talk, sparks fly and the rest…You'll have to read the book. But I will say, it's HOT HOT HOT!

Note: This is a bit of a prequel for The Ulfric's Mates and introduces the werebears and Bill whom we will continue to see in the series.

Where did you get the inspiration for your story?

I had a contract for The Ulfric's Mate and used this as an awesome chance to fill in some side stories. The kind I always want to know about when I'm reading my favorite series.

Favorite line:

She came hard, screaming into the forest, ending on a small growl of her own as he kept pounding into her, his engorged dick like an engine piston that was revved too high.

About the Author

How long have you been writing and how did you become a writer?

I've been writing all my life. I used to tell my siblings stories. But, I became serious about 4 years ago and started learning about the life of a writer.

Have you got anything else out/due out?

The Ulfric's Mate (Book 1 in The War of the Weres Series) is already out. I have an erotica, Rick Sexed up the Doc coming out November 23 and I'm furiously trying to finish another short side story that'll hopefully come out this year.

Top tip for writing/publishing?

I have two, depending on you. One, NEVER GIVE UP, and two, READ. READ. Read.

Just for Fun

If you were a shifter what animal would you change into?

Werejaguar

Favorite food and drink?

Chocolate and caffeine. But fruit, vegetables, and red meat are also dearly loved.

Favorite movie?

This is so hard for me to answer. My favorite movie depends on my mood and who I'm watching it with.
