West Coast Werewolf Cookie Review (Sanction Chronicles)

Well we all need to have fun sometimes so as a part of The Sanction Chronicles Young Adult Series I decided to do some food reviews. Not me as an author but as a werewolf character just for the Sanction Blog.

Best decision EVER. So far so good. Everything is delicious. For this round I went with cookies. Food trucks and sweets these next few weeks. Hard work, right?

West Coast Werewolf Cookie Review

Well they aren't a restaurant...

Freshly Baked

Gourmet Cookies with Attitude

Okay Readers -

Best part of this review is you can get these guys ANYWHERE - they ship. So no need to be in LA with me. - Freshly-Baked.com

I came across these guys at the Taco Cook Off - where I managed not to eat a single taco, but other yum stuff instead. Like every cookie on the Freshly Baked menu. Over all, very good. If they are there buy them. On the whole moments of greatness but not every one so choose wisely...

So - top to bottom on the favorites.

YOUR MOM - Oatmeal Coconut Chocolate Chip

The chocolate, the texture of oatmeal and the chewyness of coconut that stays with you as you chew makes this one the big winner. A MUST have and a must try. Perhaps one of my favorite Oatmeal Cookies ever, but adding chocolate doesn't hurt.

Kiss my Rosie White... - Strawberry White Chocolate

General Rule: Strawberry flavored items are weaker tasting. Cherry Rules! - Not so here. If this was not hurt your teeth deliciously sweet it would have taken top rank. Even hungry as a wolf I would max out at about 2 while Your Mom, give me 10!

To the Cookie! The flavor is subtle and mouth watering. It hits the tongue with a burst and the white chocolate just smoothes the whole thing out to complete the experience. I am not a white chocolate fan so that this one is so high on the list tells you just how good it is.

Demolicious - Chocolate Cherry

As stated rule above, Cherry Rules as does this cookie. Really fabulous and a repeater. The cherry flavor infuses the whole cookie perfectly complimenting the dark chocolate. The mix is pretty flawless. Not really anything more to say. Yum...

Mexican Arm Twister - Chocolate Chip with a Twist

If you like KICK this is not the one for you. This is your niece kicking you in the back of the leg. If you want it hot like a donkey kick to the groin look elsewhere. This is a mild, subtle flavor mix maybe why they say twist. Too subtle? Maybe. Can anyone give it a try? Yep. There is nothing to offend the palate, just a warm tingle in the after taste.

Nutty Bavarian Love Biscuit - Peanut Butter Chocolate Pretzel

A solid PB cookie, mild on the PB and with a nice move in adding the pretzels. The salty - peanut butter mix of ingredients was nice. Unfortunately the chocolate seemed to dominate the pairing. If PB is your thing though, give it a go.

Monkey Nut Blast - Banana Walnut Chocolate Chip

Sad Monkeys. I didn't taste the banana either. Say banana, I think BANANA. It was not the dominate flavor I expected based on the description. More of a chocolate chip with nuts and a light banana air about it.

The Foamy Homey - Root Beer Float

This cookie goes to show you how AMAZINGLY talented this baker is. First you taste vanilla, count down, one-two-three and the flavor changes like magic in your mouth. Root Beer! Add to that the unbelievable, no idea how he does it, tingle it leaves on your tongue and this is a masterpiece. I didn't care for it, but I fully appreciate it.

Anger Management - Peppermint Chocolate Chip

I have been really hungry before - I mean hungry, BUT I have never been tempted to put chocolate chips in toothpaste and eat it.

In closing: Am I chasing them down like a werewolf after a tasty rabbit? No, but I know other eaters who do. A lot of highlights here and good stuff. Make them into a sandwich with a little ice cream and you would only want them more. - More at Freshly-Baked.com

Excerpt from 'Dark Before Dawn' by Stacy Juba

Now available for Kindle, Nook, & Smashwords, with a paperback edition coming in November. The e-book edition is 99 cents throughout October for a special Halloween promotion.

Book blurb: When teen psychic Dawn Christian gets involved with a fortuneteller mentor and two girls who share her mysterious talents, she finally belongs after years of being a misfit. When she learns her new friends may be tied to freak “accidents” in town, Dawn has an important choice to make – continue developing the talent that makes her special or challenge the only people who have ever accepted her.

Dawn closed the front door to Serina’s cottage and joined Candace on the porch. Crisp golden and red leaves rolled along the ground in the wind. Behind the cottage, thundered the quick sharp blows of the ocean.

"What are you doing out here all by yourself?" Dawn asked.

Candace glanced up from a white wicker chair, her fingers curled around the sides. "Thinking about how I hate the jerks at school. Isn't it dumb how when someone dies, everyone was suddenly their best friend? They act like they're so important. They're so shallow."

Dawn picked up a brochure on the wicker table and read the front panel upside down. Serina, Intuitive Consultant. No last name. Serina had never shared it at their sessions.

"How come you gave Ken a hard time last night? I know he was being nosy, but you were deliberately egging him on." Dawn hadn’t planned to ask the question, it had just fallen out of her mouth, but she set down the brochure and waited for her friend’s answer.

"He's one of them."

"One of who?"

"The in-crowd." Candace spat out the words like a clump of chewing tobacco.

"What do you mean? He barely talked to Tim and Scott, and he's never been invited to Renee's parties. Believe me, he wishes she’d give him the time of day."

"He's on the hockey team. Maybe he's in a different group, but they're all the same. Snobs."

Dawn pulled her sweater tighter in the brisk breeze. "He’s not like that. Really."

Candace snorted. "Yeah, right."

Jamie beckoned them inside for hot chocolate and cookies, and Dawn gave up her defense of Ken. Candace would believe what she wanted to believe.

Dawn took her usual spot on the loveseat and accepted a cup of cocoa from Jamie. Serina swept back her white blonde hair, which Dawn imagined would be the color of an angel’s hair. Lapis Lazuli star earrings glinted like blue beacons, contrasting against Serina's black sweater and slacks.

"You look troubled, Dawn," she said, sitting at her table.

Murder and Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is a guest post by Nancy Lynn Jarvis.

Why would a Realtor turn to a life of murder and chocolate chip cookies?

I’m a real estate agent who is having so much fun killing people that I’ll probably never sell another house. I never planned to kill anyone and never intended to write anything other than enticing advertising copy for my listings, but in 2008 when the real estate market tanked and I couldn’t dispassionately tell clients their homes might not sell for what they owed on their mortgage, I decided to run away from the too-real world of foreclosures and short sales, take a time out, and pretend to be retired.

I quickly got bored and missed all the interesting people I met in real estate. Maybe because of that or maybe because my fallback mode was avoiding reality, as a purely time-filling intellectual exercise, I began to toy with the idea of writing a mystery.

The logic and careful structure of mysteries has fascinated me since the days when I sat in a wicker rocking chair at my grandmother’s house and read Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, sworn to secrecy in case my mother wouldn’t approve of a young girl reading something other than Nancy Drew.

Writing a mystery would be like solving a logic puzzle—Sudoku on steroids— and if that wouldn’t be fun enough, mystery writing would give me an excuse to delve into a world of fascinating but unsettling things like decomposition, accidental mummification, and how ligature strangulation and death by hypothermia work. Researching those topics would be akin to being a four-year-old playing with rubber dinosaurs: the game would be enjoyable, and I could control what might otherwise give me nightmares.

The idea of writing mysteries kept getting more appealing. I could take my twenty-plus years of situations—that’s a polite term for all those things that happen in the world of real estate that makes agents say, “I could write a book”—and use them for background. I could create a real estate agent protagonist named Regan McHenry who could be kind of like me, only younger, thinner, and more daring, and get back in touch with my favorite agents, clients, and associates by using them as inspiration for characters.

The murders in my books are made up, but the real estate stories are real—yes, Realtors do come across bodies in the course of doing business—so a Realtor who solves mysteries isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem.

And the cookies? Well, Realtors often bake cookies at open houses to entice buyers. It’s an old trick-of-the-trade. In the first book I wrote, The Death Contingency, Regan baked homemade cookies at an almost lethal open house. In Backyard Bones she baked cookies to take as comfort food to a client accused of murder. After Regan’s cookies appeared in two books, there had to be a recipe. When people visit my website they can not only read the beginnings of the books, they can also pick up a free recipe for “Mysterious Chocolate Chip Cookies.” The cookies make a cameo appearance in Buying Murder and a mention in The Widow’s Walk League which will be out in time for summer beach reading.
