Long-Distance Relationships: What to Do and How to Withstand it

Guest post by Melisa Marzett

LDR (Long-distance relationships) is a term that describes an intimate relationship when the partners are separated from each other by a distance.

Have you ever imagined that our planet has 7.046 billion citizens? And every man has his own character, his appearance, and his thoughts. And only one of them is your soulmate. This person can be everywhere, the life is not an easy one, and your “perfect partner” will not live in the house next to yours.

Today social media services help us a lot in out relationships. Even if our relatives, friends or our love are far away, we can speak with them, see them with the help of different programs, and hope that we’ll meet them soon.

Of course all the intimacy is conveyed in a rapid text exchange and it will never compare to the feelings of closeness. And sometimes the romance starts to totter. The main problem of such relationships is waiting. You’re waiting all the time for the call, for the letter or simply for the online status. It’s time to exploit the power of social media to the utmost!

Facebook is one of the most popular social networks. It can be the great way to help sustain your relationships. Photos and status updates can make you feel that you’re nearby, when you’re far away. There are also a lot of people there, and you can find everyone. May be you know only the name of the person you’ve met and you’d like to keep your connections with him. So the Facebook will help you.

Pinterest. Some people can say that this site can’t connect people. But it‘s a really great way to find creative and interesting solutions to make your relationships more exciting. This service helps to make your relationship more intimate and personal. That inspires and makes you closer to each other.

Different phone apps. Of course not all the apps were made for lovers. But there are a few you can try out. You can begin from Avocado application. You can show your love to the partner by sending him “kisses” and “hugs,” pictures you can draw, this program also allows making the list of events and it even has a function of an automatic countdown for your anniversary.

Blogs are the great way to understand each other better. If your love has a blog with personal thoughts and art works you can know almost everything about him. He can tell you that everything’s all right, may be with a view not to make you sad, but in any case you can support him if you understand that something goes wrong.

Some people make dates over Skype. Others prefer to play games together and even create a weekly game night and play all night together. Some couples send each other voice notes to let them know that they’re thinking of each other. There are so many ways to show your love, so be creative and it’ll bring you closer as a couple making you feel together all the time.

#BookReview: 'Consequences' by Aleatha Romig - Suspense

Consequences (Consequences, #1)Consequences by Aleatha Romig

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Consequences is an elegant tale of suspense. It hooks you from the very first chapter. You read it and wonder, "How and why did all of this happen?" As the story unfolded, I couldn't help but anticipate a major plot twist at any time - surely things couldn't be exactly as they seemed. The "kicker" comes late in the novel, but oh, what a kicker it is! Clues are present throughout the novel in the form of short chapters set in the 1980s, while the main action takes place in the present.

Claire Nichols, the heroine, is a bit hard to identify with at times, because she comes to accept a lifestyle that seems so completely unacceptable, even though she seems to be a rather strong woman in general. She's treated horribly, and by the end of the novel she's forced to use every ounce of her strength to keep from falling apart. Will she able to hold herself together? Truth, the second book in the series, will tell.

Even though she's a damsel in severe distress, and I tend to avoid this type of suspense novel because I find them a bit unsettling, I came to like Claire as a character. She really does try her best to survive in some very harsh psychological conditions. I hope she triumphs in the second book.

Disclosure: I received an e-book copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. It took me an embarrassingly long time to read and review this book - Aleatha, I'm so sorry. This review represents my own opinion, and I received no compensation other than the book itself.

Historical Romance #BookReview: The Ringmaster's Daughter by Grace Elliot

The Ringmaster's DaughterThe Ringmaster's Daughter by Grace Elliot
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this historical romance, set in a pleasure garden (an early version of an amusement park) in Georgian England, shortly before the American Revolution (1770s). Henrietta "Hetty" Hart is a lovable heroine, a kind woman who dotes on her ailing father and finds her inner strength when circumstances force her to take over her father's act. In the Georgian era, performing was still considered somewhat scandalous for a "respectable" woman, and Hetty's animal act - innocent as it would seem to us now - is salacious simply because a woman is in the ring. Hetty pushes the boundaries even further when she alters her father's ringmaster costume and performs in male dress as "Henry."

Hetty finds a foil in Tobias Wolfson, the pleasure gardens' new manager after a change of ownership. Mr. Wolfson's vision for the gardens conflict with the way things have been done since Hetty was a child. Only the worthiest acts will make the new cut, and Hetty is unsure if she can continue to support herself and her father. Unsurprisingly, after many clashes, Ms. Hart and Mr. Wolfson find themselves falling in love.

I found myself wholly invested in these characters and wanting a happy ending for them because they were written in such a likable way, two people who are rather proud and stubborn but who, in many ways, complement each other nicely.

Obstacles in their pathway include Mr. Wolfson's past and sense of duty, a famous show horse who may or may not form a bond with his new owner Hetty, and the scheming local lord.

Grace Elliot is not only a romance novelist, but also a veterinarian, and her love of animals shows through her fiction. All of the Harts' performing animals are well cared for and essentially treated like four-legged members of the family.

This novel was a pleasure to read, and the ending was a satisfying one. I'm glad I had the chance to read it.

Disclosure: The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, fair review.

The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray: #BookReview

Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray: A NovelWilde Passions of Dorian Gray: A Novel by Mitzi Szereto

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One caveat: I never read The Picture of Dorian Gray. I knew the basic plot, perhaps because I did a unit on Oscar Wilde in middle school and read one of his shorter works - I don't remember exactly. Before I started reading this book, I thought it was going to be a mash-up of the original with some of Szereto's original thoughts added in, like her Pride and Prejudice: Hidden Lusts. At first I was a little disappointed, since I really enjoyed that Austen parody. However, as I read on, I was glad to discover it was a wholly original tale crafted from the "what if" of Dorian becoming an immortal - or at least very long-lived - being.

Because I didn't read the original, I don't know how true Szereto wrote Dorian Gray to the way Wilde wrote the character, but that didn't matter as I read this. Szereto's Gray gets into some very imaginative scenarios, starting with a run-in with some very famous expatriate American writers in Paris. This chapter is fun. The tale becomes quick a bit darker in the next setting, and the darkness continues as Gray spirals downward into total depravity.

Dorian is a bastard, but it's a fantastically well-told story. Still, even Dorian Gray has some hope for redemption, and the ending of this novel is very fitting.

In the past I've enjoyed Szereto's signature blend of erotica and humor, so this novel is a definite change of pace from what I'm used to from this author. I like it. It confirms once and for all that Szereto is a well-rounded and talented novelist.

ABOUT JOANNA ANGEL AND BURNINGANGEL

Pushing the envelope, the BurningAngel Empire is a refreshingly unique web cocktail of sex, rock n' roll and pop culture. BurningAngel.com launched in 2002 with a few sets of photos and a band interview, conceived by two amateur college kids from Rutgers, Joanna Angel and Mitch Fontaine. Since its launch, it has exploded into a fierce indie company that has pioneered a new species of erotica known as "alt porn," with a network of websites and hundreds of DVDs to its credit.

The company is revered for popularizing alternative style girls, and prides itself on delivering hardcore adult content alongside band interviews, record reviews and a community with its own social networking. As both the star of many of BurningAngel's movies and the company's spokesperson and owner, Joanna Angel has stormed both mainstream and adult media. She's appeared on the cover of every major adult magazine (AVN, Club, Hustler, Picture Magazine, Adam Film World and Xtreme, to name a few) and has been featured in many tattoo magazines as well (some include Prick, Taboo, Inked and Savage). She has been featured on Fox News, Playboy TV, Fuse TV, G4 TV, KROQ Radio, as a regular on the Jason Ellis show on SIRIUS Radio, as a guest on the 2008 series premiere of TLC's LA Ink, and in a speaking role on Adult Swim's "Children's Hospital."

She has also appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Village Voice, The New York Press, Esquire UK, Details and Penthouse, among others. Heeb Magazine featured Joanna as its cover girl, naming her one of the Top 100 Up-and-Coming Jews in 2005, and The New York Post featured her as one of the Top 25 Sexiest New Yorkers in 2006.

She's also made her mark in the sex toy world, becoming a venerated Fleshlight Girl in 2013. The same year, she made further strides into the mainstream world with a speaking role in the indie drama Scrapper. BurningAngel has brought home several awards from all the major adult shows—from AVN to XBIZ, to XRCO to YNOT. Some of its accolades include Best Porn Star Website, Best Web Premiere and Best Sex Comedy. From a college dorm room to national television, BurningAngel has made a mark in entertainment, and it's only just beginning.

Snow Day! Reading 'The Ringmaster's Daughter'

Snow day! I'm trapped in the house by bitterly cold weather - which is excellent, because it means all I have to do today is edit the latest edition of my novel Midsummer Night, book two in the Pagan Spirits trilogy.

My editor, Dara, said the following about Midsummer Night:

"It was a good read. It has a nice flow and it isn't overwhelmed by too much sex and not enough story. As you know it is easy to go from erotica to porn but you keep a nice balance. I find myself interested in the storyline and not just waiting for the next sexual experience. Very well done. I was a bit disappointed that Priya wasn't mauled by pit bulls or hit with a falling meteor...what a bitch. Great character."

The first book in the series, Beltane, has been receiving some nice reviews on Amazon.co.uk.

If I finish that and spend a little time working on the historical romance short story I'm ghostwriting, I may even have time to read more of Grace Elliot's utterly charming romance novel The Ringmaster's Daughter, which currently has me enchanted.
