Ad-Dick-Tion Volume 2 ~ anthology is released today!

Breathless Press would like to announce the release of Ad-Dick-Tion Volume 2! This anthology of erotica contains my m/m/f short story "Aftercare."

The anthology's official tag line is, "In this collection of sizzling hot male obsessions, feel the heat with m/m stories by our wonderful Breathless Press authors."

"Aftercare" has been described this way: "When respectable Dr. Maggie is propositioned by one of her patients and his sexy partner, flirtation flares into a 911 emergency of passion." A little excerpt:

"We have to take our time. We have all night, don't we? Or are you wearing that goddamn hospital pager again?"
I ran my hands over my hips to show that I wasn't concealing the pager under my skirt. "I'm not on call," I said. And since he wanted to do things slowly, I decided to take my time and play with him. I got down on the floor, kneeling.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking things slowly." I showed him. Joey had very big feet. Those feet were one part of him I'd left unexplored the last time we'd been together, but I wouldn't make the same mistake this time. I kissed the top of his foot.
As my fingers brushed against the bottom of his foot, I discovered what he meant; he was very ticklish. I was hoping what followed would be like great porn, but instead it was more like a cartoon. I tried to keep hold of Joey's foot while he repeatedly jerked it away. Trying to kiss it again was even more futile. Soon I gave up and started kissing my way up his leg.
I worked my way up to his thigh, then stopped.
"Why did you stop?"
I took hold of the waistband of his white shorts and tugged at them. "Let's get these off of you."
He looked excited by the idea, but said, "No, Maggie. I don't want you to do me. I want to do you."
There was something about the way Joey said "I want to do you" that melted me like a popsicle on a dashboard in August. I felt a surge of moisture in my panties. Not cool like a frosty treat, but hot like the touch of Joey's hand on the small of my back.
Then he did something I wasn't expecting: he lifted me off the floor. I struggled a bit; I usually don't like being picked up. Loss of control throws me off my game. Not to mention that I'd operated on his back only weeks ago.

"Careful," I started to say.
He laughed. "My back is fine, Maggie," he said. "You're a great surgeon. I do this to Max all the time." He carried me toward the bedroom.
"Really?"
"No." He snorted. "He weighs, like two-twenty. And he's not a girl."

It's available in a variety of formats, and you can get it on Amazon for your Kindle (or Kindle for PC program).

You won't need to have read the first volume to follow the second. If you're the type who likes to read a series in order, you can also catch up with the first one on Amazon.

Happy Lil' Cupcake

Happy Beltane! I'm a happy lil' cupcake today.

You know what made me a happy lil' cupcake yesterday? This, from http://caviezus.tumblr.com/. Bear with my obsessive fangirling for a moment. Beltane has always been about lust and celebrating new life. (We'll get to the new life in a moment.) It's totally relevant.

These fictional characters are John Reese and Harold Finch, drawn yaoi-style.Yaoi Reese has really big hands. I like that. His hair part's on the wrong side, but...that's not...a big deal.

There's a certain internal logic to Reese/Finch, a.k.a. Rinch - they're really each the only person the other can completely trust. They have all that nerd/jock rivalry tension. But believe me, I can imagine any character bi, and even to me, these two vibe very straight.

Plus, Reese and Josselyn Carter have mad chemistry. They make sense, too - she's ex-military, he's rogue CIA. Those two should be knocking boots enhanced interrogation-style by mid-season two.

On the other hand, Rinch has a better chance of ending HEA than Reese/Carter. Assuming the CIA doesn't ultimately succeed in killing Reese, bet he ends up in living out his days in some Unabomber shack in the Pacific Northwest. Carter's plenty tough enough to be a survivalist chick, but her son Taylor keeps her connected to the outside world. I can't see Carter abandoning Taylor. Finch, on the other hand, has no such anchor - that we know of - yet.

P.S. If you want to read a romantic suspense novel about a CIA agent living out his days in a Unabomber shack, Intimate Strangers by Laura Taylor is precisely that. As of this writing, it's available FREE for Kindle.

And now: the last little bit of the Reese/Carter fanfic. Part 1 here, part 2 here and part 3 here. This is the final installment. I think.

Harold Finch entered the office to find Mr. Reese sitting at the desk near the window, sipping from a tall, steaming cup of coffee. “Good morning, Mr. Finch. I brought you some tea.”

“Thank you, Mr. Reese.” He sat down and turned on his monitor, and Reese brought the tea to him. “I spoke with Detective Carter yesterday. When I mentioned, offhand, that she was in need of a vacation, she told me she planned to take one.” Finch looked over the top of the computer at Reese, catching his eye. “She said that in a few months, she’ll be on maternity leave.”

Reese only shrugged.

“You don’t look too surprised, Mr. Reese.”

“I’m not. About a month ago, I saw her walk into a bodega and buy a pregnancy test. I thought…it might…have had a different outcome.”

Finch raised an eyebrow.  “Were you very…invested in the outcome, Mr. Reese?”

“Not at all. If she’s happy, then I’m happy for her.”

Finch shook his head and looked down at the monitor. “For a moment, I thought I detected a note of jealousy, perhaps directed at the detective’s significant other, whoever he may be.”

“You thought I was jealous of the father? No, Mr. Finch, I don’t envy him at all.”

“Detective Carter is a strong, beautiful woman, John. No one would blame you if you had amorous feelings for her.”

“There are no amorous feelings, Mr. Finch, on either side. There may be a lot of…tension between us, but my interest in Detective Carter is strictly professional.”

“Of course it is. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.” He opened the folder he’d left beside his desk the night before and got to work.

****

Reese didn’t care what Finch thought, what Finch knew. He had to talk to Carter. She came to meet him; they talked in her car. Reese was glad he was sitting behind her, because he didn’t think he could look her in the eye.

“John, if you’ve got something to say, then say it.”

“Finch said that you…made a decision.” He knew she was looking at him, trying to catch his eye, but he couldn’t meet her gaze.

“Look, I know we said no complications. I had an appointment at the clinic and everything. Then one night I was looking at Taylor, remembering what he was like when he was a baby, and I thought, I’m almost forty. I might never have another chance to do this.”

This felt familiar – wanting so badly to hold on to something he couldn’t possibly have.

She laughed; it sounded a little sad. “I know you didn’t ask for this, and I know I’ll be doing this alone.”

“Joss.” His eyes were wet. He hoped she couldn’t hear it in his voice. “Know this: I will do anything to keep you safe. I will die to keep you safe.”

“You mean you’ll disappear and make everyone think you’re dead again.”

“If necessary. Josselyn – no feelings, remember?”

“Easier said than done, John, especially when I’ve got all these hormones kicking in.”

He leaned in and stroked her neck with the back of his hand, a small gesture of comfort. “You know we can’t do this. Everyone close to me ends up getting hurt.”

She nodded. “I took all that into account when I made my decision. I can’t blame you. You didn’t ask for this.”

“No, but I’ll do whatever I can to protect you. I should go.” He had to go. If he stayed any longer he would do something he’d really regret, and he still couldn’t look her in the eye.

“John?” He stopped, his hand on the door handle, but didn’t turn. “You saved my life. You saved my son. Some part of me – a big part – is always going to be grateful to have a little piece of you to remember you by.”

His voice caught in his throat, and he couldn’t have said anything, even if he could think of the right thing to say. He got out of her car, and she drove off. Watching her leave hurt, but it was a familiar hurt, just the way things went. He couldn’t let anyone hurt her because of him.

****

Carter found Taylor at his desk, deeply immersed in social studies homework. She sat down on her son’s bed. “Taylor, can I talk to you for a minute?”

He closed his school book and sat beside her. “Sure, Ma. Is something wrong?”

She smiled. “No, nothing’s wrong. I wanted to let you know…you’re going to have a little brother or sister.”

Taylor nodded, but his face betrayed surprise. “You’re pregnant? So that’s why you’ve been tired all the time.”

“Yeah. You noticed that, huh?”

“I thought maybe you were depressed because of your job. You know, seeing dead people and all that. Ma, I know it’s really none of my business, but – do you have a boyfriend that I don’t know about?”

She shook her head. “It’s just you and me, Taylor.”

“Did somebody hurt you?”

“Only my heart, boo.”

Taylor let go her hand, but leaned in for a one-handed hug. “I’m sorry, Mom. So – you love this guy, but he doesn’t love you? What is he, married or something?”

She didn’t want to burden Taylor with her troubles, but it did feel nice to have somebody sympathetic to talk to. “No, he’s not married. It’s a whole lot more complicated than that. I think he does love me, in a way, but it’s very…complicated.”

“Wow. After all these years, I’m finally going to be a big brother. I’m happy for you, Mom. I might even change a few diapers.”

“Taylor, I promise you, I will do my best to let you be the big brother and not some kind of junior parent.”

“It’s OK, Mom. I don’t mind helping out.”

She kissed his forehead. “You’re the best son a mother could ask for.” She got up to leave, but stopped at the doorway. “Taylor, there’s one more thing.”

“What’s that?”

“Your little brother or sister might be kind of…light-skinned. Try not to be shocked.”

“Ma, you know I don’t care what color people are.”

Feeling a great sense of pride, Joss Carter went back to her room. She refused to cry. She would stay strong and refuse to ever think of her decision as a mistake.

Now sit back and enjoy what Eschelle at Mumfection made yesterday - the other thing that made me a happy lil' cupcake. I'll give you a hint:

...that time I wanted to be a scarf.

WIP Wednesday, plus some very cool Kindle Fire covers

Are you an author? Would you like to share a little bit about a current work in progress on a future WIP Wednesday? If so, please e-mail Erin O'Riordan (erinoriordan AT sbcglobal DOT net).

Today is the deadline for submitting to Vampyres: A History Written in Blood. I'll be submitting my Bessie Smith/George Gershwin vampire story, which I've decided to title "Rhapsody in Blood." Here's another short excerpt:

Bessie was glad to be inside, away from prying (blue) eyes that might accuse her and Rita of being where she had no business being. She was even happier when Rita pressed a tall glass of clear liquor into her hand. It was gin – not the shine was used to – but it would do in a pinch. It helped her make it through the round of how-do-you-dos she had to endure before her host would shut up and let her at the piano.

Taking steady sips of her drink, Bessie looked over at the piano. She didn’t recognize the white man on the bench, lazily vamping an up-tempo melody; he hadn’t introduced himself to her at the door. He had Benny’s slicked-back black hair – maybe a little longer, a few more curls tucked behind his ears. He didn’t have Benny’s milk-pale skin. He wasn’t Josephine Baker-brown like Rita, but he had a little color, like he’d just come back from vacation in Mexico. His cheeks blushed pink, and his eyes shone a vivid hazel.

The other white folks in the room, Benny included, were dressed to the nines, but not the piano player. His style was as laid-back as his piano playing, casual and flashy at the same time. The high shine of his black leather shoes said he had money, but his attitude said anything but stick-up-the-ass.

One glance at the piano player and she knew two things: he would be with her for the rest of her unnatural life, however long that would be, and he was, at the moment, slowly dying.

On a loosely related topic, there are some very cool sales happening now at MYHABIT. Today and tomorrow, you can still get a DODOcase for your Kindle Fire. These handmade covers, built to resemble an old-fashioned bound book, come in seven solid colors and a peacock pattern. This is the sky blue:

The other really cool thing at MYHABIT right now is the collection of wall art inspired by Andy Warhol and his unique pop art style. I've always loved Andy Warhol: his drawings of cats, that banana he designed for the Velvet Underground album cover (I have the boxed set with the peelable banana), his oft-parodied Marilyn Monroe image, his insane movies - even Lili Taylor in I Shot Andy Warhol. Warhol died when I was 9, but he remains a source of endless fascination and inspiration.

Review of 'The Package' by Nobilis Reed

Many elements of this brief, but thoroughly enjoyable, short piece of erotic fiction by Nobilis Reed make it read like the perfect fantasy. There's the element of mystery - who is the masked lover? Is the masked lover a man or a woman? It's not a scary kind of suspense; we're sure the narrator, known as Rose Tattoo, is safe and playing willingly. It's the kind of suspense that keeps the reader on the edge of her seat, eager for what comes next.

The surprises that await Rose Tattoo are the other delightful elements, and they lead to a satisfying (literary) climax. At the low price of this e-book (as of this writing, $0.99), no one will be disappointed they took the time to read this one.

This book is also available on Smashwords.

You can find Nobilis Reed at his website, Nobilis Erotica.

E-books vs. Paper Books: The Conflict (guest post)

With the ongoing trend of using the internet and digital objects right now, e-books or electronic books also became widely popular. Electronic books, as what its name say, are books that could be viewed through electronic devices. However, as these e-books became popular, the traditional paper copy books, which we could see, feel and touch, start to slowly fade away and lose its power. But if we compare these two kinds of book, which do you think is much better?

E-books vs. Paper book: what’s the difference?

Both e-books and traditional printed books have pros and cons. As mentioned earlier, e-books became widely popular because of the trend in using electronic devices and internet. E-books provide venue for readers to read efficiently as most e-books offer zoom functions, letter resizing and etc. Moreover, e-books are also more portable than paper books because with just one device, you can store a big number of e-books. In addition to this, e-books are more environment-friendly as compared to traditional paper printed books. As it is electronic, there is no need to use hundreds of trees to produce the material needed to print the books.

On the other hand, traditional paper printed books are also easily portable. Although it’s quite a task for you to bring a heavy load, paper printed books are much accessible since there is no battery or electricity needed to read a single chapter. It has been said that it is a much better traveling companion compared to e-books. Moreover, it has also been shown that traditional paper printed books do not cause significant eye strain compared to e-books. This is perhaps because of the time spent using the device which may eventually lead to a strain to the muscles of the eye.

Which is which?

One of the best things to do in dealing with this conflict is to simply mix and match. The use of e-books and paper printed books could vary depending on the area you want to read a book and your personal preference, of course. For example, if you will go to a place where finding a source for electricity is difficult, then it is much better to bring a paper printed book. And, if you go to an area where bringing books is quite a tedious task, then e-books are a much better option.

Then again, you should remember that it doesn’t really matter whether it is a paper printed book or an e-book you are reading. As long as you are able to sit down, take a break and read a few lines from your favorite book, whichever medium you use will be a helpful tool.

"Bomb Pop" is re-released by Noble Romance. Join me at nobleauthors.blogspot.com

Once upon a time, there was a contemporary erotic romance called "Bomb Pop." Released on the 4th of July, 2009, this plucky little e-book garnered some sweet reviews before the publisher went out of business. It disappeared from Amazon's Kindle store.

Now it's back. Noble Romance re-released "Bomb Pop" at midnight. Join me at the NR Author's Blog January 31, 2011. I'll be popping in and out all day to blog, answer your questions, etc.

Bomb Pop (n): 1. A classic American frozen treat, a fruit-flavored popsicle in the red, white and blue of the American flag. 2. The story of Gretchen Malone, a second-grade teacher who normally keeps her wits about her, especially when it comes to workplace romances. That is, until hunky kindergarten teacher Thom Reno brings up a long-buried memory from summers past and a repressed schoolgirl crush along with it.

"What happens when you get a teacher who equates men to a 'bomb pop?' A short story so steamy you will have to fan yourself when you’re finished. 'Bomb Pop' is a great read! This is the first story I have read by Ms. O’Riordan but it won’t be my last. She is definitely an author to keep an eye out for." ~Stephanie Wilson (Manic Readers)

"If you're looking for a quick read that’s sweeter than candy and hotter than an August summer day, then 'Bomb Pop' by Erin O’Riordan is for you. Filled with sugary sweet metaphors that combine sex, popsicles and ice cream sundaes, this story will leave you craving a meltingly hot round of sweaty sex followed something icy cold and syrupy sweet to cool you off." ~Roxanne Rhoads (OystersAndChocolate.com)

"Well written, agreeable to read, inventive by times … and most important of all: erotic. I can only congratulate the author for her taste and sensitivity in writing and style." ~Lena Vanelslander (Facebook)

UPDATE (January 2015): Find "Bomb Pop" at my Etsy shop, Writer's Brain Has Wings.
