#ParanormalRomance #BookReview: DemonFire by Kate Douglas

DemonFire is the first book in Kate Douglas's 4-part DemonSlayers series. Based on the series name, you might expect the heroine, Eddy Marks, to be the tattooed, leather-jacketed, tough-as-nails heroine typical of urban fantasy. Actually, she's a reporter in a small northern California town near Mount Shasta. Her life is pretty normal, expect for the fact that her father, Ed, believes in a lost continent of people who live not under the ocean like the Atlantians, but inside the mountain.

In accordance with The Legend of Chekhov*, which states, "When the heroes of a story are told a legend, myth, or fairy tale, you can almost guarantee that the story is true and that the heroes will have to deal with it at some point," the Lemurians who live in Mount Shasta are real. When you think of the Lemurians, think of the elves from the Lord of the Rings books/movies. They're a tall, placid, beautiful people with long, flowing hair and are immortal.

Although the Lemurian crown prince, Alton, is a major character in this novel, he is not the hero. The hero is Dax, a fallen demon (not a fallen angel, but a born-demon who has rejected The Abyss to become good) who must prevent the escape of the other, much more malevolent demons, which threatens not only the earth but also the paradise dimension, Eden. Dax is able to take on human form for seven days only, and borrows the body of a young American man killed in France in World War II.

Although they know they can only have one week together, Eddy and Dax are destined to fall in love.

Note the unflattering haircut on the female cover model. It looks like she had a cute pixie cut, and then someone badly Photoshopped longer hair in behind her head.

I enjoyed the "we only have one week together" twist on the traditional paranormal romance; it helped make this novel more suspenseful. The final chapter is especially suspenseful. It was one of those books that had me flipping to see how many pages were left to see if the story could be wrapped up before the pages ran out.

Thus far, the DemonSlayer series is not nearly as sexually charged as Kate Douglas's ultra-erotic Wolf Tales series, although this book is an erotic romance.  Eddy and Dax are reluctant to have sex at first because their impending separation will be so painful, but their bodies are drawn to each other. A common theme in many of Kate Douglas's works that I've read is the healing power of love - and, yes, of sex as well - and this book is no exception. It's a nice twist that Dax has never been in a human body before and is really discovering physical pleasure for the first time, which makes for some really hot and emotionally charged sex scenes. I did enjoy those parts of the book.

The next book in the series promises to introduce a potential romance for Alton, with Eddy's friend who's a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

The Folklore: Dax's true, demon form is sometimes a six-limbed, dragon-like creature, sometimes a snake-like creature, and sometimes a black mist. His human body has a living tattoo of a snake in which his demon powers are stored. The tattoo seems to be alive independent of Dax, and sometimes it tries to attack him. Eddy has the power to calm and soothe it.

Dax has as his earthly companion Willow, a name that stands for Will O' The Wisp. Also called a sprite, she takes the form of a small blonde woman with blue wings who sparkles with blue energy. Her job is to pull energy out of her surroundings to funnel to Dax. With the energy Willow provides, Dax is able to shoot fire and ice from his human hands, an ability he'd normally have in his demon form.

The will o' the wisp is a fascinating feature of Northern European and other world folklore. (Rural Argentinians have a strong folkloric tradition of them - they're called Luz Mala in Spanish - as do aboriginal Australians.) You can read quite a bit about it on Wikipedia. That encyclopedia entry associates the will o' the wisp with the hinkypunk of English legend, which of course we all know from the Harry Potter series. Professor Lupin taught Harry and his classmates to battle hinkypunks - which Rowling describes as having the appearance of smoke - in their third-year Defense Against the Dark Arts class.

The appearance of "ghost lights" or will o' the wisps in graveyards and marshlands is explained scientifically by photon emissions produced from the oxidation of methane and other gases produced by decaying organic materials. The Enlightenment-era physicist Alessandro Volta, for whom electrical volts are named, was among the first scientists to study the phenomenon.

Literary Aside: Volta is credited with discovering methane. As an interesting literary aside, Volta was a vocal opponent of anatomist Luigi Galvani's theory that electricity was what made living things alive. Galvani could show experimentally, using a rudimentary battery cell, that electricity could cause muscular contractions in dead frogs. His experiments are some of what inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein - sometimes considered the first science fiction novel. But I digress. If you want to know more, you could read An Entertainment for Angels: Electricity in the Age of Enlightenment by Patricia Fara.

What I'm Reading Next: The third book in Jackie Kessler's Hell on Earth series, Hotter Than Hell.

Disclosure: I purchased DemonFire with my own funds - I believe I bought it several years ago while Borders was still in business. I was not compensated for this review in any way, shape or form. It represents my own honest opinion.

#Paranormal #ChickLit #BookReview : 'The Devil's In the Details' by Kimberly Raye

I have a serious problem with this cute, quirky paranormal chick lit novel - it's not even officially out until October 8, 2013, but I need the sequel right now. Thanks to Jackie Kessler's Hell's Belles, I love a PNR with a plucky succubus heroine, and Jessie (Jezebel) Damon fits the mold.

Jessie is the daughter of Satan herself. Satan is the daughter of the original fallen angel who rebelled against God. He's the king of Hell, but he spawned four princesses. Satan's sisters are Jessie's Aunt Bella (a.k.a. Belial), Aunt Levita (a.k.a. Levithan), and Aunt Lucy (a.k.a Lucifer). The four princess-demons rarely get along and would rather decapitate and disembowel hapless humans than wear white gowns.

This is the pretty cover that will be on the final version.

Satan, whose earthly name is Lillith Damon, goes out of the way to irritate her sisters with her wedding plans. Makes sense - their dad has declared that whichever sister gets married first will take over from him.

Jessie finds herself planning her mom's impending wedding. The problem is, a superhot demon slayer named Cutter Owens is gunning for dear old mom, and despite her promise to herself to stay on the straight-and-narrow and abandon her succubus ways, Jessie feels an undeniable attraction to him.

Actually, Cutter only wants to use Lillith to get to a demon named Azazel. Azazel stole Cutter Owens' soul, so Jessie and Cutter strike a deal - he won't slay Lillith and ruin her wedding if Jessie agrees to help him find Azazel. Cutter doesn't know Lillith and Jessie are mother and daughter.

The ARC isn't as pretty as the final cover will be.

Meanwhile, Jessie is being stalked by an unknown demonic entity. She suspects her Aunt Bella - the least modernized of the four princesses of Hell, still known to live in a cave. Even though she's technically immortal, dying in the human body she currently possesses would send Jessie back to Hell, where she would have to wait in a long line before she could get back in another human body.

I had a minor panic when I realized there weren't enough pages left in the book for the Jessie-Cutter storyline to resolve itself, which is why I need the second book, The Devil Made Me Do It, right now, please.

I haven't read any of Kimberly Raye's other books. I know she wrote the Dead End Dating series, because my mom read it. She also wrote a vampire/cowboy series for Harlequin Blaze. Based on this one, I'd definitely read Kimberly Raye again.

I received an uncorrected proof of this book free through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for a fair, honest review, which represents my own honest opinion. I do not receive any other kind of compensation for these reviews.

The Second #BookHaul From Better World Books @BWBooks

Look what came in the mail yesterday! There's no mail today, of course, because it's U.S. Independence Day! We're celebrating our independence from the U.K. and also the time Will Smith and Bill Pullman defeated those awful, awful aliens.

You can find the photos from my previous Better World Books haul here.

What's inside this mysterious-looking chartreuse package? As it turns out:

...Three new (well, new to me) books from Nalini Singh. I already had Slave to Sensation, Visions of Heat and (unfortunately, in hardcover) Kiss of Snow. Today I acquired Mine to Possess and Hostage to Pleasure (books 4 & 5 in the Psy-Changeling series), plus Play of Passion (which is the ninth book and comes immediately before Kiss of Snow).

The plan is to finish reading Kate Douglas's DemonFire, then finally finish off Jackie Kessler's Hell on Earth series by reading Hotter Than Hell (technically there's a fourth book in the series, but you can't get it in paperback - and I'm scared of what's going to happen to Paul), then read Visions of Heat. When that happens, then I'll need to get Book #3, Caressed by Ice. I'll feel good when I have books 1-5 all ready to go. I'll worry about 6-8 later.

What else was in that package?

I love my monster mash-ups, and now that I've read Jane Eyre (not to mention Jane Eyre Laid Bare), I have to read this vampire mash-up.

These are a few of my mash-ups. Little Vampire Women is not pictured (it's at my parents' house), nor is Android Karenina.

And yes, I did donate a paper bag filled with gently used books to Better World. Books come in, books go out. It's the circle of life.

How Aoife Brennan Got Started Writing Erotica - Guest Post

So how did a nice woman like me end up writing filth?

I see myself in the dock, facing the judge and having to answer his question. How did a nice middle class, middle aged woman like me end up writing lascivious copy? I can’t even pretend that my debut novel is a bodice ripper in the traditional sense because I used some very frank language and also the sex scenes went on for pages. I didn’t hide behind the euphemisms normally employed to soften text. I did not have my heroine have a ‘between her legs’ or ‘lady garden’ and I didn’t have my heroes have ‘throbbing manhoods’ or ‘sabres’. I called a phallus a phallus and a vagina a vagina. Actually, I used colloquialisms instead including the quite harsh words such as pussy and cock. And I had them doing some very descriptive things - did I mention these couplings went on for pages? Also, you will note I also have only one heroine but lots of heroes. I thought it was time to readdress the balance of the player. Women have needs too, don’t you know.

So, how did a nice woman like me end up writing filth? My first answer is poverty. There is nothing like an empty bank balance to make the mind go into overdrive. Love may be free but lust will pay the bills. I had two choices. I could either go out there and sell my body, but while it had one careful owner and two offspring, and was in good nick for the mileage, it still wasn’t that attractive. Nor did I fancy doing the dance with no pants with lots of strangers possibly even more decrepit than me! Call me old fashioned, but I scratched that idea off soonest. So, what was the alternative? Writing about it. I decided to follow the old adage - where there is muck there’s brass.

And secondly, I also wanted to put sex into a context. My debut novel, The Cougar Diaries, Part I, is not autobiographical but I had so much say about a woman in her forties entering the dating world again. I had read, along with the rest of the world, 50 shades and hated it. I had said, along with the rest of the world, I could write better and so I did. Of course, time will be the judge of whether my debut novel is better than 50 Shades but I think it will give the genre a good run for the money.

While I disliked the actual books themselves, and could not get past the mid-point of the second, I liked what they did. Take a bow EL James for you brought erotica out of the shadows, dusted it down and put it square and centre in the middle of the living room. I liked that. Women have always liked sex but somehow this century we took a back seat. In ancient Ireland, women had a much more important role to play and could by Brehon law even demand conjugal satisfaction. Somehow this equality got lost and women, especially ‘good’ women were not meant to like sex and God forbid, to like arousal in the form of erotic books and visual aids (aka porn).

However, while I admire the good work in outing the fact ‘women like sex’ achieved by EL James, what I disliked was the main female character. Let me just tick off a few of my annoyances. She was young and virginal yet managed to achieve orgasm at the touch of button – and very often not her clitoral button. For a supposed intelligent woman she was just plain stooopid. When I read the opening scene where she was interviewing Mr Grey and she read out the question ‘Are you gay?’ by mistake, I went what?  How could a university educated woman not be able to read a line ahead without speaking the words out loud? Finally, she was ridiculously beautiful, bagged a billionaire and managed to get loads of really expensive presents into the bargain. This is Barbara Cartland territory only with nipple clamps and whips. Actually, Cartland did have whips, just not the nippley things.

So, I wanted to write a bonk buster but based a bit more on reality. I understand fiction is fiction, but I wanted a main character that I could identify with. And since I am a woman in her forties, newly separated, with teenage children and aged parents, I thought I would write a bit about me. Or me if I were in a bonk busting novel.

Also, I think I am not alone. There are many women in their forties re-entering the dating marketplace. And by parallel causes, men too. But since I am a woman, I decided to write from experience (and imagination). I discovered many things when I became single again. I discovered that men, marital status immaterial, hit on separated women. As a male friend said to me, once he knew a woman was separated, she took on a more sexual appearance to him, even more so than single women. He could not explain why he felt this way. I could not either, but I certainly experienced it first hand.  Then women tend not to trust you around their husbands – ridiculous it felt to me, since affairs are rife in modern Ireland, but I was certainly cut from many social outings as a result.

Then, when you separate, you lose friends. Sometimes, in an acrimonious breakup, you lose the lot! But even in amicable separations, it happens by default. I was again shocked as I felt I hadn’t changed. Of course, it is not me that had changed, but the other person’s view of who I was.  Still, I found it very upsetting to lose people who were friends. It took me a long while to figure out that stuff happens. I learnt not to question myself and not to blame them either. Sometimes, friends are for a reason and for a season.

Then there was sex - the whole thorny issue of getting naked with a stranger. As is pointed out to me in my novel, hopefully the man naked in front of you is not actually a stranger. But it still boils down to the same thing – having sex for the first time with a new person. You’d think, like riding a bike, sex should be easier or at least the same twenty odd years into adulthood. Think again. It is twice as daunting starting out again and you need to be a very brave person to take the first step.

Finally, this novel is not anti-marriage. It does not celebrate singledom.  It is a very realistic look at the life of a 40 plus woman learning to the do the dance with no pants again. Learning to live again. The best review I have got so far was from a happily married friend. Half way through the novel, she booked herself and her husband into a hotel without the children for a 24-hour shagathon. Now, that is a good review!

Happy reading!

An Interview and #Giveaway with Lula Lisbon, Author of 'Cinderella: A BDSM Retelling'

1) Which was your favorite scene to write in Cinderella: A BDSM Retelling?

Undoubtedly it was the scene where Fairy Kink Mother appears and creates her magic! Her imagination, creativity, and humor were a delight. When she reappears at the end, I also really enjoyed that – though I don’t want to spoiler anything. I have to say she was my favorite character to write if only because her earthy haughtiness (if it can be said that such a thing exists) really amused me.

 2) Did you have a favorite Cinderella book or movie when you were younger?

Of course I don’t remember the name of the book or its author, but I had a gorgeously illustrated picture book of fairy tales. I’ve always been enamoured of historical fashions, and I’ve spent quite some time studying fashion in earnest. I pay quite a bit of attention to fashion in my version of Cinderella, and I’d like to think my love of costume shines through.

3) What was it about the Cinderella legend that appealed to you?

I think it’s always been my favorite ever since I was little. Being a natural blonde, plus possessing of an extremely rich imagination my entire life, I could easily close my eyes and imagine being swept away to live ever after as Princess Cinderella. Hey, it’s the original rags-to-riches tale! Who hasn’t at some point? ;)

4) Was this your first fairy tale retelling? Can readers look forward to any more retellings from you in the future?

My first was actually Wolf Moon: Redd’s First Ride, which was rated 5 stars by Hotly Ever After (now merged with Kinky Book Reviews), and earned me an interview at the Wholesome Addiction podcast, episode 32. It is an alternate universe retelling of Red Riding Hood complete with werewolves (I call them weyres in my world), set in a kind of pre-Emancipation America. It is the first of four parts, but eventually it will be expanded and revised to full novel length. I also have plans for a novella length Beauty and the Beast: A BDSM Retelling, and perhaps one or two others.

I adore fantasy, magic, the paranormal, and science fiction, and I plan to incorporate those elements more in the future.

5) If you were making a movie version with your dream cast, who would you get to play Cinderella?

I love Keira Knightly, but I’m not sure how she would look as a blonde. Maybe I’d cast her as either Druscilla or Arabelle, joined by Natalie Portman. The Ravyn stepsisters are sexy, and look alike enough to pass as blood sisters, so I think those two would do nicely. As for Cinderella, I think I’d go with Princess Bride-era Robin Wright. I had a huge crush on her when I was younger, and I think she’d be gorgeous in the part. Kim Cattrall would rock it as Fairy Kink Mother, and I’d love to see Jon Hamm as the long-haired rock star, Kink-Bottom Prince.

6) What can readers expect to look forward to in the Aeternitas: Goddess of Time series?

This is certainly a magnum opus, and I don’t expect to be finished soon. I started it for NaNoWriMo November 2012, and originally it was going to be one book. I’ve expanded the concept to a trilogy, which I imagine in its totality will top 300,000 words.

I’m a knitter, and it took time for me to work my way down from size 8 needles, on which you knit the typical scarf, to size 0’s, on which you knit socks, and I’ve applied that knowledge to writing. The plan now is to work my way up with longer and longer works (at over 21,000 words, Cinderella: A BDSM Retelling is my longest to date) until I’m comfortable with the scope of Aeternitas. I have a couple of novellas and one-off novels planned in the meantime.

Here is the first book of Aeternitas: Goddess of Time, entitled Heart of Ice, in one sentence: “A heartbroken French lesbian flees the Revolution and collides with Philadelphia criminals, while denying feelings for a mystical beauty from the future.” As for what readers can look forward to from the trilogy: time travel, lesbian erotic romance, intrigue, suspense, loss, heartbreak, dreams, magic, criminals, war and uprisings, art and social history, an ancient goddess, and much more. It is something that I would love to read myself, and I hope that others will feel the same.

7) Are you a writer who likes to work in a quiet room, or do like music/movies/TV?

I prefer quiet, although on occasion I like to listen to music. Musically I prefer heavy music and female vocalists, but when writing I need something without vocals, as I get too caught up in listening to be able to concentrate otherwise. I love classical music, Bach and other Baroque composers being a particular favorite, as well as ambient electronic and trip hop. Once in a while vocals won’t bother me, so I’ll get down with some female-fronted symphonic metal bands like Epica, as that style is my favorite genre. I love many genres, but I’m a die-hard metalhead at heart. I give a bit of a nod to the industrial metal scene in Cinderella, and I plan to incorporate my knowledge and love of music further in future projects.

8) What's your current favorite craft beer?

Variety is the spice of life, but a perennial favorite is Unibroue’s La Fin Du Monde, a wonderful bottle-refermented Belgian style golden tripel ale. Another I’ve found that I very much enjoy is Orkney Brewery’s Skullsplitter, a Scotch Ale with a pretty awesome Viking on the label. As for seasonals, I love fall and winter beers for their richness and spiciness, so I’m in love with Southern Tier’s Imperial Pumpking, with its delicious pumpkin pie essence, and Lancaster Brewing’s Winter Warmer, with an amazing holiday spice and dark dried fruits flavor profile. They’re even more special due to seasonal availability.

I could name a few more, but I’ll end it at that for the sake of brevity!

As for wine, I enjoy that too – I love spicy, rich reds most of all; but I know a whole lot more about beer. I’ve been a server (what artistically-temperamented person hasn’t?), and I learned a lot about craft beers both from the bars at which I’ve worked, and from my own explorations through craft beer bars in my home town of Philadelphia, PA. We’re quite proud of our amazing array of available obscure brews. I’d love to brew my own eventually.

9) Finally, where can readers find you if they want to keep up with you online?

Thanks so much for having me on your site! I really enjoyed the thoughtful questions.
I love to hear from my fans, and I encourage them to get in touch.

BLURB:

Dominas Arabelle and Druscilla Ravyn’s talented apprentice, Cinderella, wants to become a Mistress, but the cruel stepsisters thwart her at every turn. When famous rock star Kink-Bottom Prince is seeking a new Mistress from all those in the City, poor Cinderella doesn’t think she stands a chance. But a kind Fairy Kink Mother magically appears to help Cinderella win her Prince’s collar — and heart.

This 21,000+ word erotic novella contains menage, femdom, a submissive rock star getting fucked in front of his fans, spanking, whipping, magical strap-ons that come to life, pegging, face-sitting, forced feminization and sissification, a self-satisfied Fairy Kink Mother, squirting, fisting, exhibitionism, comedy relief, and much more!

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

“Stand up, let me look at you,” the Fairy said in a no-nonsense yet kindly tone. She circled Cinderella with the critical hawk’s eye of an exclusive haute couture designer, tapping one front tooth with an immaculately manicured fingernail in thought. “Hmm… yes, I believe I have just the thing in mind. We’ll take care of everything all at once. Close your eyes, now.” The Fairy Kink Mother pulled a handful of something out of her bag and blew it gently over Cinderella’s head. A shower of what felt like the softest down feathers swirled around her, caressing every curve of her nude body. When at last the dancing zephyr of feathers stopped, Fairy Kink Mother bade her open her eyes. Cinderella gasped. The pain from her beating was gone, and her skin was now covered in living, gleaming gold that sparkled and shone with even the slightest movement.

“Some Fairy Kink Mothers might let you go just like that, because admittedly you are magnificent as you are. But I didn’t win the prestigious honor of Fairy Kink Mother of the Year six years running from doing only the bare minimum… if you’ll pardon the pun!” She laughed at her own witticism, but Cinderella was too overwhelmed to say a word.

“Oh, my stars, I nearly forgot the most important part!” Again she reached into the ridiculously tiny bag and started to pull out golden straps attached to something. As with the other things, it seemed to start out doll-sized, and then grew to full size bit by bit as she pulled it out. The strangeness of this magic almost made Cinderella dizzy to behold. Now she saw that it was a strap-on harness, with an amazingly life-like cock complete with smooth balls attached. It all gleamed as golden as Cinderella’s skin did now, who accepted the Fairy’s proffered arm as she helped the girl step into the harness. It seemed to tighten by itself to fit Cinderella perfectly, and Fairy Kink Mother beamed with excitement.

“This isn’t any ordinary strap-on, my dear. Oh, no, no! This is so very special, and if I do say so myself, it may just be my most brilliant creation to date!” She caressed the shaft of the cock with one hand, and Cinderella had to bite back a moan of pleasure. She was shocked to realize that it felt as natural and as much a true part of her as if it were her own cock from birth! Just that one simple stroke from Kink Mother’s hand had been deliciously intriguing. “Ah, thus, now you see… when it is worn by you — and only you, I might add, as the magic is limited to one client — it will feel and react as if it were your own natural cock. Because, you see, with the magic, it truly is!” Fairy Kink Mother chortled with delight, clapping her hands like a little girl. “It’s a brilliant creation, isn’t it? Go on, touch it, see for yourself!”

Cinderella reached down to delicately caress the golden cock. It was flaccid, and as warm as her own body to the touch; but when she wrapped her fingers lightly around it, it twitched, and she gasped in delight. Moving her hand, admiring the erotic scene it made to have a cock of her very own, it wasn’t long before it grew to throbbing and rock-hard in her fist. She could feel both her pussy, wet with desire, and the thick cock in her hand dripping with pre-cum. The sensation was dizzying. Fairy Kink Mother swiped at the wet cock-head with one slim fingertip, raised it to her lips, and licked it clean.

“Delicious,” she said, giving Cinderella a saucy wink. “Kink-Bottom Prince will not have eyes — or mouth — for anyone else, I promise you.” Cinderella tugged down the miniskirt over her cock, admiring the bulge it made through the sheer gold fabric.
