October 14, 1980: Richard Meeker Jr., the only child of actor Mary Tyler Moore and her first husband, dies of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He had been holding a small .410 shotgun, the model of which was later removed from production because its trigger could be too easily pulled accidentally. Meeker is 24 years old.

October 14, 1994: In an event that foreshadows the 2022 attack on Salman Rushdie, two religious extremists stab and wound Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz outside his home in Cairo. The extremist objected to Mahfouz's novel Children of the Alley, an allegorical story about the three Abrahamic religions.
