Last WIP Wednesday of March 2012

Guest authors needed - all genres! Are you an author? Would you like to share a little bit about a current work in progress on a future WIP Wednesday? Then I invite you to be my guest. Please e-mail Erin O'Riordan (erinoriordan AT sbcglobal DOT net).

Next week's WIP Wednesday guest will be Rue Allyn. I'll also be a guest on Rue's blog that day, talking about "The Spell You Cast," and why witches are an appropriate subject for Easter time.

I continue to work on my submission for Melange Books' Having My Baby anthology. The deadline was supposed to be April 1, but now it looks as if it's been moved (again) to July 1. Or is that an April Fools Day joke?

(Warning: clip contains disgusting animated depiction of spoiled milk.)

In this totally historically accurate clip, the Pagan Simpsons are worshiping Baal with sacrifices. Baal is not the name of any particular god, but a Near Eastern word that means "lord." In The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Barbara G. Walker connects Baal to the Irish god Bel, the sun-god who presided over Beltane. Some Baals are forms of the Annually Dying and Returning Vegetation God wedded to the mother-goddess.

The feminine form of Baal is Baalit, but the goddess is often called some form of the word Asherah. After all, she is the primary being, the mother of life, and he is simply her consort - as necessary, perhaps, but not as widely honored.

Fans of Stargate: SG-1 probably think of the South African actor Cliff Simon when they think of Baal:

The former swimmer and model may have played an imperious, despicable villain pretending to be a god, but he looked hawt doing it. To paraphrase the Jay-Z/Kanye West collaboration "[Expletive Deleted] in Paris," he Baals so hard motherfuckas tryin'a' find him. Speaking of which, there's a clever and utterly literate parody called "Bitches in Bookshops:"

Yep, she said, "I read so hard I'm J.K. Rowling." Speaking of J.K. Rowling-related Kanye West parodies:

Referring, of course, to West's takeover of Taylor Swift's Video Music Awards acceptance speech (see HERE).

That's my week in writing - what are YOU working on?

WIP Wednesday - Purim and Polyandry

Are you an author? Would you like to share a little bit about a current work in progress on a future WIP Wednesday? If so, please e-mail Erin O'Riordan (erinoriordan AT sbcglobal DOT net).

When the sun goes down tonight, it will be Purim, that most festive of Jewish holidays.

(Guy Ritchie and Madonna dressed as the Pope and a nun for Purim 2005)

What am I working on this Wednesday? Now that I've finished "Rhapsody in Blood," I'm back to work on editing a story for the Melange Books Having My Baby anthology. This one is not erotica; its working title was "Polyandry," and as you'll see in this excerpt, it presumes a queendom in which the queen and her daughters each have several husbands:

The two women had retreated to the sitting room, leaving Morgan’s husbands and baby in the dining room as the servants cleared the table. “You know, Eva,” said Morgan, using her sister’s name within the family, “Mother was asking me the other day how you would feel about getting married.”

Evangeline laughed. She had inherited her mother’s Middle Eastern complexion, but had her father’s red hair and green eyes. A band of dark freckles crossed her nose. “I’ll bet she already has a husband picked out for me.”

“She does,” Morgan said seriously. “She wants you to marry her minister of finance, Eric de la Fontaine. She’s probably already talked to him about it.”

Evangeline, who had plopped down on the sofa, squeezed her eyes shut and tried to imagine Eric de la Fontaine. He was an older man, she knew. He was probably about forty, and not unattractive. He had lovely hazel eyes, dressed himself very well and had a sexy deep voice. “Oh, but Morgan, he’s friends with Gabriel. He must know that Gabriel and I are in love.”

Morgan sat on the sofa beside her sister. “You’ve every right to say no. But I enjoyed Eric’s company before I fell in love with Chow.” She smiled dreamily.

“It isn’t strange for you, Mor, to imagine your ex-boyfriend marrying your sister?”

“I imagine it would be even stranger for Eric, sharing beds with two different princesses.”

The doorbell rang. A moment later a servant came in, bowed and said to Evangeline, “Excuse me, Highness, but Her Majesty is here to see you.” Evangeline and Morgan went to greet their mother.
Queen Jasmine greeted her daughters and sons-in-law warmly. She took the baby from Chow’s arms and carried Lily into the sitting room, saying, “Come, Evangeline, we have to talk.”

“I already know what you’re going to say, Mother,” said Evangeline, being a bit smart. “You want me to get married.”

“I’d like to retire from all the formalities of public life soon,” the Queen said. “As my successor, you must be prepared. A husband would help you keep your personal life in order as you adjust to public life. I’d also like to know that you will have a successor.”

“Mother, I’m only twenty. As I’m sure you’ve heard, I’m in love with John Gabriel. Gabriel has told me that he’s be more than happy to provide me with an heir. . . after he and I are married, of course.”

The queen said, “I certainly do hope you’re taking precautions to prevent me having an illegitimate grandchild.”

“Of course, Mother.”

“Let’s suppose for a moment that you’ve decided to take John Gabriel as a second husband. He is, after all, Irish, and not of royal ancestry. If you have to take a native-born man as your first, how would you feel about Eric de la Fontaine?”

“He’s handsome enough, I suppose. I barely know him, though – and doesn’t he already have a wife?”

“I’ll arrange for you to meet with him,” was the Queen’s only reply. She did not stay to socialize. She handed Lily back to Chow and said goodnight.

After the Queen left, the women returned to the sitting room. “Eric never did get married,” Morgan told her sister. “I guess I ruined him for all other women.”

Evangeline sighed. “How well did you know him, Mor?”

Morgan shrugged. “As well as I ever knew any man before Chow and Oba. I thought about marrying him, but…”

“But what?”

“He was married to his job at the finance ministry.”

“So he’s one of those guys who’s obsessed with his career,” Evangeline said. That might not be such a bad thing, she thought. Since Gabriel already fulfilled her emotional needs, a husband who’d stay out of her hair and stick to official Avalonian business might not be so bad.

“I wouldn’t say that,” Morgan replied. “He’s an old-fashioned patriot, Avalonian to the core. He loves working for the ministry because he gets to do his duty, serve his country. He’s really very sweet, Eva.” She ran her fingers through her sister’s straight red hair. “Besides, he has that gorgeous curly hair. Don’t you want to pass that on to your babies?”

Chow entered the sitting room, carrying a softly whining Lily, and took a seat beside Morgan. “I think she’s hungry,” he said.

Morgan lovingly took her baby, rested Lily’s tiny head on her shoulder and comforted the little bundle. “She just misses her mama.”

“I bet you can’t wait until you have one of these,” Chow said to Evangeline.

Evangeline laughed. “Mother may want me to get married, but she can’t make me have a baby. It’s a lot of responsibility…and I always imagined it would be me and Gabriel.”

“Give Eric a chance,” Morgan said as she unbuttoned her blouse to feed Lily. “FYI, Eva, he has the perfect amount of chest hair. It’s not too much and it’s not too little.”

“Probably more than I needed to know,” Chow said, rising from the sofa. “Unless you need anything, darling, I’m going to grab a Guinness with Oba while you have Lily.”

“Go,” Morgan said. “I’ll have the nanny put her to bed. She’ll be out like a light once her tummy is full.” Chow kissed Morgan’s forehead and took off toward the kitchen. Evangeline watched her sister feeding Lily and wondered what it would be like to have a baby of her own. As sweet as the tiny princess was, Evangeline didn’t feel ready.

New 'Heartache' anthology out from eXcessica; sale at Melange Books

I'm pleased to announce the eXcessica Publishing's semi-annual erotica anthology is out, and once again it contains an Erin O'Riordan. This original, never-before published story is called "The Witch's Tale." It has a witch - and werewolves! The anthology's title, and theme, is Heartache.

A snippet of "The Witch's Tale:"

...At the darkest hour of the night, all the wolves seemed to go away. Except one. His howling kept me awake. I went to my window and looked; it was a big brown male with honey-colored eyes.
I went to the door and opened it. "Come in, Milos," I said.

The big wolf trotted in and lay on the rug in front of my fireplace, whining. I brought him the remains of the bread I’d eaten for dinner (unlike the wolves, I ate no meat). He ate the bread. I sat beside him and stroked his fur until he fell asleep.

I fell asleep stroking the wolf. I awoke to find the fire had died out, and I was lying on the floor with only a naked, sleeping Milos to keep me warm.

"I was lonely," he said when he woke up. "I am alone in my den now. You were always kind to me and my people."

"You’re welcome to visit," I said, staring hard at the pattern on the rug and trying not to see his well-muscled body.

"I want to stay," he said.

"I don’t think you should," I said, drawing my conclusions about his intentions. "Milos, you’ll find another mate. One of your own people. A woman who can give you children that are like you."

"I know," he said. "But it will be many seasons before another single female becomes mature. I can’t wait that long. I got too used to Svjetlana, and then the babies, lying beside me. I won’t stay forever. Only let me stay for a few nights."

He lifted my chin so that I stared into his honey-colored eyes. They were both innocent and wild, sad and hopeful. I wanted to comfort him, especially after all the times I failed to help him. Still touching my face, he brought his lips to mine.

The gesture stunned me; in truth, it was my first kiss. I’d devoted so much of my life to aiding the sick and injured on this strange isle, I’d neglected finding a mate of my own. Milos, however, seemed to know exactly what he was doing. His thumb stroked my cheek as he kissed me, his tongue begging entrance into my mouth. The effect of his naked body, so near to me and so affectionate, was dizzying. I wasn’t thinking straight; it was as if I’d swallowed one of my medicines. Milos wanted more…and so did I. I parted my lips.

The official blurb: "Erotic, romantic, poignant and wistful, this anthology collection from Excessica authors will thrill you, touch you, and stay with you. These stories dare to explore the pleasure and pain of a lover gone, the one that got away, the forbidden affair, a true love existing on borrowed time. These are tales of passionate affairs that cannot last, but they are exquisite gems while they do, and like the star that burns brightest, these stories burn fast, dazzle and smolder in the memory."

Heartache is my 6th anthology with eXcessica. I also wrote stories in:

Divine Matches

Happy Endings

Love Bound

Strange Love

Wonder

WIP Wednesday

Erin O'Riordan: As August comes to a close, I have to decide whether I want to try to make the September deadline for Melange Books' "Steamy Christmas Wishes" anthology. I have a steamy idea involving the creative use of a gingerbread house. The minimum word count is 6,000, though - do I really have the will and the time to craft a 6K yarn before September ends?

An unfortunate incident occurred last week, in which Mr. Tit Elingtin attempted to fix my HP Mini lapbook, but in fact broke it beyond repair (at least for the moment). In it were two WIPs: a f/f fairy tale based on the legend of the wood wives, and a sort of f/f Miller's Crossing, with gangsters and a hot chorus girl. I'm hoping I can get those back some day.

Melodie Campbell: Just finished the first full draft of The Goddaughter (Orca Books, due out Spring 2012)! It’s off to my publisher. Now the dreaded wait…what will he want to change?

I got my start writing comedy. I wrote standup and had a regular humor column for five years. All writing is work. Writing comedy is definitely hard work. Every word counts. The placing of every word counts – what we call ‘comic timing’. I work hard on my timing. So I always get a little antsy when the first draft hits the editorial desk. Will they tinker with it?

Luckily, Rowena Through the Wall went to press with humor intact. If you like this brand of wacky humor, check it out at Amazon:

Is that a broadsword on your belt, or are you just glad to see me?

Davis Aujourd'hui: Babes in Bucksnort is the sequel to The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude. Once again the unconventional bourbon-swilling, chain-smoking nun will spin hilarious tales about the residents of Bucksnort while she tests the will of a reformed prostitute who just happens to be her Reverend Mother.

But there's trouble brewing in the Snortlands. The town busybody crusades to stamp out “the gay menace.” That's when she brings Reverend Billy-Bob Blunthead and his Born Again or Burn Forever Disciples for Jesus to town to do the job. It will be an uphill climb when the closet doors of many gay people burst open.

In between laughs, Sister Mary Olga dispenses nuggets of wisdom during her Holiness Classes. The bottom line is that everyone is welcome in Sister Mary Olga's classes. Join the diverse cast of zany characters for a joy ride that will tickle your funny bone until it aches. See my blog: http://bestsatireseriesofthedecade.blogspot.com/

Malcolm R. Campbell: While I’m still zoned out in Writer’s Limbo after finishing Sarabande, I’m trying to pull together everything I know about my characters and get started on the next book in the series. So far, the title is The Grandfather and the Goddess, but that sounds a bit kinky and probably will go away before I’m done with the story.

Blurb from Sarabande: After her sister, Dryad, haunts her from beyond the grave for three torturous years, Sarabande undertakes a dangerous journey into the past to either raise her cruel sister from the dead, ending the torment or to take her place in the safe darkness of the earth.

Sarabande leaves the Montana mountains for central Illinois to seek help from Robert Adams, the powerful Sun Singer, in spite of Gem’s prophecy of shame. One man tries to kill her alongside a prairie road, one tries to save her with ancient wisdom, and Robert tries to send her away.

Even if she persuades Robert to bring his magic to Dryad’s shallow grave, the desperate man who follows them desires the Rowan staff for ill intent...and the malicious sister who awaits their arrival desires much more than a mere return to life.

Welcome to WIP Wednesday

Today I'm instituting what I hope will be the first of many Work-in-Progress, or WIP, Wednesdays. I'll share what I'm working on with you, my lovely reading audience. So will some guest bloggers. If you're an author of any genre and would like to participate in the next WIP Wednesday, simply shoot an e-mail to erinoriordan (at) sbcglobal (dot) net.

Erin O'Riordan: One project I have in the works is an old story (never published in any form) I'd like to revamp as a submission to Melange Books' Having My Baby anthology. The call for submissions goes:

"Having My Baby
(Deadline February 2012, Release May 2012)
Spring is a time for new birth and Melange is actively seeking sensual, poignant, joyous, humorous, and unusual stories about having a baby."

This calls for a sweet, sensual romance, albeit one with no explicit sexuality. The work I have in mind is about a crown prince torn between the man she loves and the man royal protocol dictates she should marry. Being part of the royal family does have its privileges, though, especially when you come from a nation with some out-of-the-ordinary marriage customs. If you liked "Innocent," I think you'll like this one.

Judith Marshall: Right now, I’m staring at a proof copy of my second novel, Staying Afloat, the story of how a perfectly sane woman can lose her moral compass. I’ve had the book professionally edited and, as I did with my debut novel Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever, I uploaded the manuscript to lulu.com and ordered a proof copy. It’s so much easier to do a final read-through in an actual book format, than online.

The next thing I’ll do is read the book with fresh eyes looking for missed typos. Then I plan to send it to a friend of mine who has agreed to give me objective feedback on whether the story works overall, noting where the story bogs down, any inconsistencies, or other problems with the flow. I think it’s important for any author to get a potential reader’s opinion of their work before it’s published. You have to be open to hearing some negative feedback, but in the end, who better to evaluate your book than a person from your targeted audience?

P.S. Husbands has been selected for the Spirited Woman Top 12 Summer Pick List and is being adapted into a screenplay this summer. Yippee!

Sheila Lowe: I’m a mystery writer whose Forensic Handwriting series (published by Penguin’s Obsidian imprint) is now on the back burner while I finish my new book, formerly titled Lying…in Bed, currently titled Head Case, and possibly soon-to-be-titled What She Saw.

The new book begins with a young woman who wakes on a train and realizes that she hasn’t a clue who she is, how she got there, or where she’s going. She gets off the train and meets someone who seems to know her and takes her to her apartment, where she discovers that she has two different identities. Her task is to find out why, and what happened to rob her of her memory.

Morgan St. James:

DIAMONDS IN THE DUMPSTER

The third zany Silver Sisters Mystery, Vanishing Act in Vegas has just been released. My sister/co-author Phyllice Bradner and I are now working on #4, Diamonds in the Dumpster. Juneau, Alaska antique shop owner Goldie Silver and her twin Godiva Olivia DuBois, popular Beverly Hills columnist who writes the “Ask G.O.D” advice to the lovelorn column and their 80-year-old mother and uncle, former vaudeville magicians, don’t look for trouble. Somehow, it always finds them. This time Goldie’s cruise ship captain husband has invited Flossie and Sterling on a cruise that will feature a magician’s conference. They even manage to get the third performer in the act they perform on Thursdays at the Home for Hollywood Has-Beens on board the ship—Waldo the Wonder Dog. It’s murder on the high seas and Waldo uncovers a clue that almost gets Flossie and Sterling arrested as the perps. As for the diamonds, is it Godiva’s new boyfriend Dexter Diamond, something more valuable, or both?

We just started this book and we’re up to Chapter 7.

CONFESSIONS OF A COUGAR

This is a funny “coming of age at 42” story that is actually creative non-fiction. I lived a good part of it. I was 42 the first time I left the United States in the 1980s. My boyfriend had a lease on a cottage in Surrey, England in the village of Upper Warlingham (a place most people never heard of). He suggested my friend and I go to England all expenses paid---by him. We had quite an adventure for the three weeks we were in England and Holland. My friend was a recent widow, and my boyfriend said the trip would be great R and R for her. Little did I know that it was also for some R and R for him back home with me out of the way, so when I discovered that I really didn’t feel guilty about our escapades. We encountered many funny situations and several young hunks along the way. Back then, a cougar was a mountain lion! There is a bit of fiction mixed in, but the majority is true. And yes, I did become a modern definition cougar—so did my friend. I think our youngest conquests were in their early 20s.

I am about 25% to the target word count and working it though with Henderson Writers’ Group in Las Vegas. They are my best sounding board.

A Post Blogged by an Idiot, Full of Sound and Fury, Signifying Nothing

Melange Books has released The Smell of Gas, an erotic, pulp-style crime thriller by your humble author and her husband Tit Elingtin. It's available now in print and e-book formats. I don't want to blog about it here, though. I already blogged about it today on Breaking In Before Breaking Down. I would rather blog about...breakfast.

It was a fine, sunny morning in my home town this morning, so Tit Elingtin walked over to our usual breakfast spot, then went on a 3-mile walk along the river. I had the pancake special, chocolate chip pancakes. Delicious. Along with the chunks of candy in my breakfast, I was also treated to a hunk of eye candy, a guy at a table across from us who looked just like Sam Worthington. (I wish I had a Hunk du Jour photo to link to, but somehow HdJ has managed to miss the Aussie stunner.) Well, almost just like - this guy's hair was a little redder.

Many of you will remember Sam Worthington from Avatar. I like to remember him from Terminator: Salvation, because, well, I just like to think about Christian Bale.

I also like to remember Sam Worthington's interpretation of MacBeth. Those who love Claire and Leo in the contemporary telling of Romeo + Juliet (may Pete Postlethwaite rest in peace - best Friar Laurence ever!) will enjoy the 2006 version of MacBeth starring Worthington. I like the sexy, redheaded Scottish witches. They're like a trio of soothsaying Shirley Mansons.

This weekend I have rented, but have not yet watched, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead. Should be a good one, though. It has Hamlet, vampires and a score by Sean Lennon. So far, the best film take I've seen on the Hamlet story remains Royal Deceit, with Gabriel Byrne, Kate Beckinsale and Christian Bale. Not just Christian Bale, but a NAKED TEENAGE Christian Bale. Best Shakespearean version? I like Ethan Hawke's attempt. Julia Stiles is a particularly charming Ophelia.

Do not get me started on the Mel Gibson version of Hamlet. I will no longer watch films with that anti-Semitic, misogynistic douchebag. Except maybe Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome; Mel is canceled out by Tina Turner, feminist icon supreme and possible reincarnation of ancient Egyptian woman-pharaoh Hatshepsut.

Sooooo anyway, Sam Worthington's redder-haired doppelganger sat in the restaurant, eating sausages off a fork in a way that would make an erotica writer with an active imagination think impure thoughts. In stepped a cute woman with a ponytail, approximately Sam 2's age, and I thought they would make a good couple. They would have adorable babies. Because, you know, babies are what you're supposed to be thinking about when it's a warm spring day, you're surrounded by egg and bunny decorations and everybody's getting ready to celebrate Ostara.

I would like to have some brilliant post connecting the Pagan celebration of Ostara with Jewish Passover and Christian Easter, since Passover was this week and it is Easter weekend. I don't. I have this, a post blogged by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. (I promise you a worthy Beltane post on May 1.) Buy a copy of The Smell of Gas!
